MMPI Launches Art Fair in Los Angeles, Opens 9/30

By: Jul. 14, 2011

MMPI, producer of internationally renowned art shows including The Armory Show®, Art Chicago®, Art Toronto, VOLTA, VOLTA NY and NEXT, will introduce Art Platform-Los Angeles (www.artplatform-losangeles.com) in Fall 2011. The new art fair will focus on promoting internationally recognized local talent and local emerging artists (with the goal of contextualizing art from LA), and will highlight Los Angeles as a major art center.

Art Platform-Los Angeles is scheduled to open Friday, September 30, 2011 and will run
through Monday, October 3, 2011. It will feature approximately 75 galleries in over 50,000 sq. feet of the L.A. Mart building in downtown Los Angeles (1933 S. Broadway). Native Angelino Adam Gross has been named executive director of the new venture and will lead the Art Platform-Los Angeles team.

As a part of the Development staff at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Adam Gross helped MOCA navigate one of the most challenging periods in its history through his work developing patrons and major gifts for the institution. Prior to his post at MOCA, Gross was a private art dealer and consultant, working with corporations and individuals on collection building and management, curating exhibitions, and supporting arts-related marketing initiatives. With undergraduate and graduate degrees in contemporary art history from UCLA, and over 15 years in the arts in Los Angeles working with galleries, auction houses, private and corporate collections, and non-profit arts organizations, Gross brings a unique local perspective to this initiative. Before embracing his passion for the arts, Gross' experience included work in finance and banking in the US and Europe.

"Los Angeles is one of the most dynamic centers for contemporary art and culture in the
world," said Adam Gross. "My goal with Art Platform-Los Angeles is to significantly broaden civic support and interest in the arts in this great city and help contextualize the art that is created by and inspired by Los Angeles. It is my hope that Art Platform-Los Angeles will assist in explaining Los Angeles' rich history of art making while celebrating the vibrancy of the city's current art world."

"Adam Gross has witnessed and played a substantial role in the development of Los Angeles as an art center," said Paul Morris, MMPI Vice President of Art Fairs and Events. "With his extensive professional experience and background, he brings both a strong business sense and a sensitive understanding of art to his work. The fact that he is a born-and-raised Angelino makes him the ideal person to direct an art fair in Los Angeles."
