Lang Lang Returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall, 11/6

By:

Virtuoso pianist Lang Lang returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall, Sunday, November 6, at 7:30 p.m., in a recital featuring music by Bach, Schubert and Chopin. The performance is part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's 2011/12 Colburn Celebrity Recitals, which feature some of the world's leading virtuosos.

The recital opens with Bach's Partita No. 1 in B-flat major, followed by Schubert's Romantic masterpiece, his Sonata in B-flat major, D. 960, and closes with Chopin's ultra-demanding pianistic studies, 12 Etudes, Op. 25.

Lang Lang, with his brilliant style and flair, has been known for bringing new audiences to classical music. Of him, composer Tan Dun says "Lang Lang is a poet and has magical powers...In his storytelling, I hear the voice of the human soul and the silence of nature. I do believe Lang Lang is one of the most outstanding pianists of our time."

Heralded as the "hottest artist on the classical musical planet" by The New York Times, 28-year-old Lang Lang has played sold-out recitals and concerts in every major city in the world and is the first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also performed with Berlin Philharmonic and all the top American orchestras. He appeared in the 2009 Time 100 - Time magazine's annual list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. In 2008, more than five billion people viewed Lang Lang's performance in Beijing's opening ceremony for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad. All of his albums have entered the top classical charts as well as many pop charts around the globe; and in 2007, he was nominated for a Grammy, becoming the first Chinese artist to be nominated for Best Instrumental Soloist. In February 2010, Lang Lang joined Sony Music Entertainment as an exclusive recording artist. Lang Lang last appeared in recital at Walt Disney Concert Hall in November of 2009.

Future performances for the 2011/12 Colburn Celebrity Recitals include: violinist Joshua Bell (February 7, 2012); pianist Leif Ove Andsnes (February 8, 2012); Jeffrey Kahane - Celebrating 15 years of Jeffrey Kahane at Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (March 7, 2012); Piatigorsky International Cello Festival (March 18, 2012); and baritone Matthias Goerne with Christoph Eschenbach as pianist (April 16 and 18, 2012).
