KABUKI: BACKSTAGE TO HANAMICHI at JACCC 10/15

By:

The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center and The Japan Foundation are pleased to present BACKSTAGE TO HANAMICHI-A Behind the Scenes Look at the Color, Magic and Drama of Kabuki with lead actors Kyozo Nakamura and Matanosuke Nakamura of the world-renowned Shochiku Company. Performances will take place October 15, 2009, at 2 pm & 8 pm.

Kabuki with its magnificent beauty and highly refined skill stands as a rare jewel among the great theater traditions of the world. BACKSTAGE TO HANAMICHI provides the audience with a rare glimpse into the traditional world of this centuries-old theater and the painstaking preparations that lead up to an actor's grand entrance onto the hanamichi stage.

The lecture/performance includes two kabuki classics: Sagi Musume (The Heron Maiden) and Shakkyo (Lion Dance), contrasting the lyric style of the onnagata (actor specializing in female roles) with that of the dynamic, acrobatic style represented in the heroic Lion Dance.  This program is presented in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary Celebration of The Japan America Society of Southern California.

The Aratani/Japan America Theatre at the Japanese American Cultural and
Community Center is located at 244 South San Pedro Street (between 2nd and 3rd Streets)
Los Angeles (Little Tokyo), CA 90012
