The Donmar Warehouse production of "Red" By John Logan, featuring Jonathan Groff and Alfred Molina, directed by Michael Grandage, begins previews tonight, August 1 and opens August 12 at Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum. The show will continue through September 9 on Tuesday through Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 2:30 and 8 p.m.; Sunday at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

"Red" is set in the 1950s in the New York studio of artist Mark Rothko, known for paintings that seem to pulsate with a life force of their own. Rothko is working on a commissioned series of paintings for the new Four Seasons restaurant and his recently hired assistant is rapidly learning about the uncompromising aesthetic of his new boss. Though Rothko feels the threatening presence of a new generation of artists, he tells his assistant, "There is only one thing I fear in life, my friend . . . One day the black will swallow the red."
