Joan Arline's BALLET TO BURLESQUE Plays Arthur Newman Theatre 5/22

By:

Joan Arline - former Sexquire cover girl, who toured the country as a headliner during the golden era of the burlesque circuit from 1953-1958, will perform her acclaimed night club and cabaret show "Ballet To Burlesque" on Sunday, May 22nd at a 2 PM matinee in Palm Desert at The Joslyn Center's Arthur Newman Theatre. The show will feature stories and songs from the burlesque era, complete with a few of her original costumes, vintage posters, and a few other surprises.

Joan got started in burlesque at her husband's recommendation and, after discovering how much more lucrative it was than the classical dance she'd been trained in, decided to stick with it until becoming a mother in 1959. But after she got them out the nest - it was her chance to return to the spotlights with roles in numerous plays and musicals around the desert, including The Palm Canyon Playhouse and The Palm Springs Follies. She has also been featured on television shows and film documentaries about the age of burlesque and it's impact on society and morals. Which, by today's standards, seem like little more than one's vivid imagination. But Arline tells us stores about what went on backstage that you didn't get to see - which is often more interesting than what they saw on stage, well, almost!

Joining Joan will be a featured female and male vocalist as well as a pianist to give us the full effect of how burlesque was more of a variety show than just your basic 'striptease'. "Ballet To Burlesque" is being presented by Les Michaels' Life Is A Cabaret "Sundays In Summer" Series, which was such a hit from last July that it carried over through February of 2011 at The Arthur Newman Theatre located in The Joslyn Center, 73-750 Catalina Way in Palm Desert. Show time on Sunday afternoon, May 22nd is 2 PM with doors opening at 1 PM, reservations for the Joslyn Center may be made at 760-325-2731.
