Heidi Duckler Dance Presents A Bela E A Fera Salon: An Evening Of 3 Clarice Lispector Short Stories In Dance

Heidi Duckler Dance presents three Clarice Lispector short stories, Such Gentleness, A Bela e a Fera and the premiere of Duckler's new dance film, The Sound of Footsteps on Sunday, July 22 and July 29 at 7:00pm at The Bendix Building, 1206 Maple Ave, Ste 1100B, Los Angeles, CA 90015.

Inspired by her recent travels to Brazil and Chile, where she first learned of Lispector's works, Duckler has since choreographed and directed three of Lispector's short stories. All three works are set to original music composed by M83's Joe Berry, with narration by Paula Rebelo, star of Sarah Ruhl's The Clean House and 2015 Ovation Award winner. Lispector is considered by many to be the most important Jewish writer since Kafka, writing largely from the perspective of a female narrator grappling with issues of identity, exposed through interior monologues and stream of consciousness.

The evening begins with Such Gentleness, taking place on the illuminated, plexi glass and steel, light table in the arched hallway of the historic Bendix Building. HDD company dancer, Lenin Fernandez, transforms the hallway by evoking the interior monologue of the narrator and exploring the absence of social hierarchy from a female point of view. Then A Bela e a Fera takes the audience outside onto the rooftop where Duckler worked with set designer, Carlo Maghirang, to create a metaphoric structure. Maghirang's structure provokes thoughts on nuanced and often uncomfortable tensions with issues of economic inequality, poverty and homelessness. The internal text of Lispector's story inspired Duckler to experiment with the idea of "self as site;" the thoughts of the narrator creating a type of psychological site - a "mind-space" - to explore with movement performed by HDD company dancer, Haylee Nichele (July 22) and Tess Hewlett (July 29). The audience then moves back inside for the screening of The Sound of Footsteps. Duckler collaborated with fabric artist, Mimi Haddon to investigate sexual expression transcending age. The short film brings to life the interior dialogue of the author through Duckler's sensuous movements and Haddon's stunning fabric work.

The evening will conclude with drinks, supper and an exclusive look into the creative process of Duckler's newest Lispector work, The Chandelier, premiering in 2019/2020 at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.
