Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse Presents WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG, 7/11-22

To celebrate Woody Guthrie's 100th birthday, the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse will present a concert production of Woody Guthrie's American Song, an award-winning musical based on the life and music of the iconic American folk singer, written and directed by Peter Glazer, and performed by a cast of talented actor/musicians running from July 11 to July 22.

From the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma at the dawn of the Great Depression, the musical follows Guthrie west to a migrant camp in California and east to a Bowery bar on the New York island. Featuring classics like "Bound for Glory" and "This Land Is Your Land," as well as lesser-known treasures like "Jolly Banker" and "Ludlow Massacre," Woody Guthrie's American Song has earned rave reviews around the country since its debut in 1988. 

Woody Guthrie worked as a sign painter and a farmhand, a disk jockey and a sailor in the Merchant Marine. Above all, he was a storyteller. He sang of peach pickers and copper miners, hobos and outlaws, the poor and the hungry, the rootless and dispossessed. He gave names to the nameless. He confronted the shameless. He praised the diamond desert and the California stars. His life and songs have inspired musicians from Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen to Billy Bragg and Ani DiFranco.

The cast features Lisa Asher, Berwick Haynes, Sam Misner, Matt Mueller, and Megan Smith. The house band includes long-time Freight regulars Chuck Ervin, Robin Flower, Tony Marcus, and Harry Yaglijian, as well as Musical Director Jeff Waxman. Lighting design is by David Elliott.
