Eternally Hip! Engelbert Humperdinck Shines At The McCallum Theatre, 4/13-14
1970’s pop icon Engelbert Humperdinck, dubbed “The King Of Romance," brings his trademark vocal stylings and bedroom eyes to the beautiful McCallum Theatre for two performances on April 13 and 14 at 8:00 pm. Selling more than 150 million records over the past 40 years, Humperdinck has earned four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe for Entertainer of The Year in 1988, a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame and countless swooning fans along the way.
Born Arnold George Dorsey in India in 1936, Humperdinck grew up in England. He got is distinctive name from his manager, who also managed Tom Jones – a somewhat “tongue in cheek” name, after the 19th century German composer of Hansel and Gretl. He didn’t protest and has said “ I had no choice. I was a starving singer and someone was giving me a chance to get into the business”.
His first big hit “Release Me” became an international sensation in 1967 and he followed up with seven consecutive number one hits. At one point, his single of “Release Me” sold 80,000 copies in one day and he even knocked The Beatles off the top of the charts. He has been awarded sixty-three gold records and 24 platinum records over his career. For decades, the likes of Jimi Hendrix and The Carpenters were his opening acts.
Opposite of his sexy pop-idol persona, Humpertdinck is a self-described loner and introvert. Despite any shyness, he has continually reinvented himself to remain current in the pop music world and even today, at 76, performs over 140 concert dates each year. Humperdinck is currently collaborating on a new CD with Grammy-winning producer Martin Terefe.
