BWW Reviews: DEATHTRAP at The Engeman

Ira Levin's Deathtrap is no doubt produced often since its Broadway staging in 1978. Therefore, you need something to entice you to see this Tony nominated play and I've just the thing.

Not only is this a gripping story, the cast of Northport's stunning John W. Engeman Theatre is truly outstanding. Their effecting performances, directed by Richard T. Dolce, make Deathtrap a wonderful kick off to The Engeman's incredible eighth season. This is truly a Broadway experience.

For the record, it seems there can be no way to justifiably tell you about the story without any spoilers. There are many twists and turns in this production running through September 7th at The Engeman. Simply put, you have to see this two act three scene show.

Basically, the story follows Sidney Bruhl, an established but financially unstable playwright, looking for his next hit on the Great White Way. As Sidney, James Lloyd Reynolds emulates Sidney's strong demeanor and possessiveness well. Sidney's wife, Myra Bruhl portrayed by Mary Mossber, is sickly yet confident and stands her ground. Clifford Anderson, portrayed by Loren Dunn, is Sidney's student from a seminar he conducted. Mr. Dunn is a great Clifford with a felonious look. Providing the comedy is Sue Mathys as Helga Ten Dorp, the Bruhl's nosy, gypsy neighbor. And rounding out the cast is Patrick Husted as Porter Milgrim, the Bruhl's lawyer. The top notch cast is more than reason to see this regularly done production.

Additionally, you can't help but notice Jonathan Collins' remarkable set that dresses the large stage of the Long Island venue. You will find yourself "wow"ing the single room set that is Sidney's writing room is filled with masculine, mahogany touches and a partner's desk as a focal point. This is beautifully enhanced by Wilburn Bonnell's lighting together with Laura Frey's sound design. Be sure to look out for Mr. Bonnell and Ms. Frey's very impressive and convincing lightning storm. Furthermore, Lauren Paragallo's costumes were on point for people of Westport, Connecticut, in 1978.

As so without question, The John W. Engeman Theatre has another hit with Deathtrap. A riveting story, an excellent cast, and the gorgeous Engeman Theatre make for a wonderful night of theatre.
