BWW Reviews: A Powerful JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre

By:

While it is true that the musical Jesus Christ Superstar is done consistently among the regional and community theatre scene, we should take the opportunity to see classics like this whenever we can. The superb incarnation currently running through April 26th at Oakdale's Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center (CMPAC), is a great chance to see it again or see it for the first time.

CM vet Danny Amy leads the large, talented cast. Literally... he directs the production and stars as Jesus of Nazareth. Mr. Amy is an excellent Jesus with great stage presence fully immersing himself into the role. Naturally, this isn't supposed to be a joyful story. It depicts the events leading up to the crucifixion from his arrest, sentencing, and even the last supper with his disciples which opens act two.

Besides Mr. Amy, Debbie Hecht is a highlight portraying Mary Magdalene. Mary is a disciple and finds herself falling in love with Jesus. Ms. Hecht absolutely shines particularly on her featured parts in the "Everything's Alright" numbers. Also, Kyle Petty, portraying disciple Simon, gave a show stopping performance of his song and Jim Sluder was a fine Judas. Speaking of Judas, a large portion of the story revolves around him and his conflicting emotions about how Jesus is leading the disciples.

The entire cast was truly top notch.

Additionally, the intimate Long Island venue is undergoing some exciting renovations which include a beautiful new orchestra pit for the band that is wonderfully conducted by Musical Director Matthew W. Surico. They perform the demanding Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber rock score exquisitely (if sometimes slightly overpowering the cast) giving a real rock ambiance. This is enhanced by David John Serrechia's fantastic lighting design the stunning costumes designed by Ronald Green III and Amy Dowdell.

And so, Jesus Christ Superstar is certainly another hit for the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center. A powerful story, tremendous cast, and a classic score make for a thrilling night of theatre.
