Review: The Bare Bone Theatre Company presents Neil LaBute's SOME GIRL(S) Image

The latest offering from The Bare Bones Theatre Company is a splendid incarnation of Neil LaBute's off-Broadway play Some Girl(s). Excellently directed by Bare Bones vet Eric Clavell, the production runs through August 20th at the charming Posey School dance studio on Main Street in the beautiful town of Northport on Long Island. The story follows a gentleman, simply known as "Guy", as he travels across the United States in an attempt to make amends with several ex-girlfriends before he embarks on his marriage.

The one-act play is billed as a comedy/drama, but this super talented cast seems to emphasize the drama side which proves very affective.

Striking is how each woman has a different reaction to "Guy", portrayed by Jason Moreland, calling her up out of the blue wanting to talk. For example, Tyler, portrayed by Samantha Orner, is cool with the situation as they drink and smoke and laugh about their time together while Sam, portrayed by Lara Hunter, is more hesitant. Another creative point you'll notice is how natural the flow of the dialog is. There are times when you see a show and sometimes the dialog is "theatrical" I guess you could say. In this show, it is totally believable that they have known each other for a long period of time... over a decade. There are some funny moments, awkward moments, tense moments, interrupting each other, finishing each other's sentences... it is all there.

The set is relevant and easy to maneuver. "Guy" meets these women in different states, so set designer Jodi McIntyre has excellently put together a standard hotel room with a large bed, desk & chair set, and mini fridge and these are moved around to represent the different states. Special kudos also to sound designer Shannon Raffaniello and lighting designer Margo Campbell for adding to the edgy feel.

And so, Neil LaBute's Some Girl(s) is certainly another hit for The Barebones Theatre Company. A stupendous cast make this a thrilling night of theatre.
