Review: NEXT TO NORMAL at The Lyric Theater in Harrison

There are musicals that entertain, and then there are musicals that reach into your chest, grab hold of your heart, and refuse to let go. Next to Normal, now playing at The Historic Lyric Theater in Harrison through Sunday, April 19, does exactly that in this powerful collaboration between the Ozark Arts Council and NorthArk Drama.

With book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, and under the direction of a fearless creative team, this Pulitzer Prize-winning musical dives headfirst into the complexities of mental illness, grief, and the fragile threads that hold a family together. The story follows Diana Goodman, a suburban mother navigating bipolar disorder, as her husband Dan and daughter Natalie struggle to keep their lives intact while confronting the emotional ripple effects of Diana’s condition. As memories blur with reality, the show asks difficult questions about love, loss, and what it truly means to be “normal.”

From the moment the first note is struck, this production establishes an emotional intensity that never lets up. The Lyric Theater proves to be the perfect intimate setting for a show of this magnitude, allowing every glance, every tremor in a voice, and every moment of silence to land with striking clarity. So deeply affecting is this production that the audience could be heard quietly sniffling before Act I was even over, proving that this cast doesn’t just perform the story—they make you feel every moment of it. The rock-infused score pulses through the space, making songs like “Just Another Day,” “I Miss the Mountains,” and “You Don’t Know” feel less like performances and more like confessions.

This cast is not just a group of performers, they are masterful storytellers who guide the audience through every high and low with remarkable authenticity. Julianna Hamblin as Diana delivers a performance that is both haunting and heartbreakingly human, capturing the fragility and fire within a woman battling her own mind. Brian Ashton Miller’s Dan is layered with quiet strength and aching devotion, revealing a man who loves deeply even as he struggles to cope. Emily Provence as Natalie brings a raw intensity to the stage, embodying the frustration and longing of a daughter trying to find her place amid chaos.

My starry-heart eyes go to Gavin Wilson as Gabe, who moves seamlessly between charm and unease, adding an ethereal quality that keeps the audience questioning what is real and what is imagined. There was an audible collective gasp when it was revealed that he was a ghost. His charisma made everyone swoon, and I loved his interactions with the band.

Jayden Bradshaw’s Henry provides moments of warmth and grounding, offering a glimpse of hope and normalcy in an otherwise turbulent world. Meanwhile, Corey Smith skillfully navigates the dual roles of Dr. Fine and Dr. Madden, bringing distinct presence and perspective to each, guiding both Diana and the audience through the complexities of treatment and understanding. Together, this ensemble doesn’t just tell a story, they make you live it.

Vocally, this cast delivers in a way that honors the show’s demanding score. The harmonies are tight, the solos are emotionally charged, and the ensemble work creates a soundscape that feels both polished and deeply personal. The cast’s vocals and energy were absolutely amazing—so powerful that each number seemed to surge with emotion and urgency. I especially loved that the band was placed on stage, making the music feel like an active part of the story rather than something happening behind the scenes. The live instrumentation underscores each moment beautifully, maintaining the show’s signature rock edge while never overpowering the performers. Orchestra members are Abigail Coble on piano, Eric Ostberg on violin, Eric Stefanski and Kory Lejeune-Gonzales on guitar, Nathan Stech on bass, and Hannah Nicholls on drums.

Technically, the production shines in its simplicity. Lighting plays a crucial role in guiding the audience through shifting realities, often blurring the line between what is real and what exists only in Diana’s mind. The set design, while minimal, is used effectively to create multiple spaces and emotional landscapes without distraction.

What stands out most about this Next to Normal is its bravery. This is not an easy show to produce, nor is it an easy show to watch. It demands emotional investment from both its performers and its audience, and this company rises to that challenge with remarkable dedication. Productions like this are why community and regional theatre matter so deeply. The Ozark Arts Council and NorthArk Drama have created something that not only entertains but also sparks conversation and fosters empathy.
