THE FOOD CHAIN Runs 3/19-4/4 at Onyx Theatre

Off Strip Productions, The Onyx's resident theatre company, presents The Food Chain by Nicky Silver. The limited run begins Thursday, March 19, at The Onyx in Commercial Center and plays through April 4. The show is directed by Asylum Theatre Artistic Director Sarah O'Connell.

A darkly comic farce about our obsessions and the extreme lengths we take to pursue them, TheFoodChain opens with Amanda, a poet, calling a crisis hotline. She'sbeenmarriedto filmmaker Ford for three weeks...however he took a stroll two weeks ago and hasn't returned. Unfortunately Bea, the hotline volunteer, isn't much help as she doles out her Jewish motherly advice. The second act pits Otto, a 400-pound salesman at Barney's, against Serge, a sexy underwear model. Otto pleads for Serge's return after their long, torrid affair, which we discover wasn't that torrid...nor that long. Finally the third act brings all the characters together in a collision course of comic insanity.

"The Food Chain has been one of my favorite plays for many years," says Onyx Producing Director Troy Heard. "The themes of sexual obsession and body image resonate even more strongly today than when it premiered in the 90s. We see people struggle with eating disorders quite publicly through reality TV and internet blogs. Somehow Nicky Silver was able to turn that into a biting farce that was both prescient and poignant."

Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays, March 19 through April 4 at 7:00 pm with Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Tickets are $25.00 for general admission and $20.00 for students, seniors and military.
