Smith Center to Host 4th Annual Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards This Weekend

By:

In a continued effort to nurture the artistic expression and development of Nevada's high school theater students, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts will host the fourth annual Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards, concluding the 2015 - 2016 school year with a competition that will culminate in a final performance on Sunday, May 29 inside Reynolds Hall. Tickets for the event are $10 and may be purchased in-person at The Smith Center or online at TheSmithCenter.com.

The awards show will feature 19 nominees who were selected by these high schools. Two students will be recognized with the Dr. Keith Boman prize for "Best Performance by an Actor" and "Best Performance by an Actress" award from among the 19 Nevada nominees. The two selected nominees will receive a complimentary 10-day trip to New York City to represent Nevada in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, they will enjoy private coaching, master classes and rehearsals with renowned professionals, followed by a panel of industry experts selecting two exceptional students for The Jimmy Award for "Best Performance." Participants will receive opportunities for merit scholarships and professional advancement, as well as the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform on the Minskoff stage on Broadway.

"Last year, it was magical to watch these kids blossom from their school theater productions, to taking the stage here at The Smith Center, to having an opportunity to learn and perform on a world-famous stage in the heart of Broadway," said President and CEO of The Smith Center Myron Martin. "I can't wait to see what's in store for this year's performances and to announce this year's winners."

The Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards welcomes public, private, charter and non-profit high schools across the state to nominate two students from their respective school. In order to qualify, students must have played a leading role in an eligible, full-length musical production on their high school campus during the school year.
