Broadway Bound and Studio One's Summerlin Dance Academy are proud to present the theater production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music at the Summerlin Library Theater January 31 - February 15, 2014 for 12 memorable performances, including matinee and evening show times, sponsored by Rudy Foundation.
Based on Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse's book, The Story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, The Sound of Music is a Tony Award-winning musical known for its optimistic energy, endearing characters, and warm melodies. Set on the brink of a tumultuous Nazi-controlled Austria, the musical emphasizes the strengthening of love and familial bonds during times of struggle. Centered on Maria's zest for life and music while caring for the widowed and hardened Captain Von Trapp's children, the story follows the development of a meaningful and life-changing relationship between opposites. Telling the timeless tale of a former young nun's free-spirited nature and a stark disciplinarian's rigidity through music and joy, the production will be brought to life by Broadway Bound's talented young cast performing timeless favorites "Edelweiss," "My Favorite Things," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "The Lonely Goatherd," and the title song, "The Sound of Music."
"Our program is known for our high-energy productions that are not just entertaining for audiences, but also empowering for young talent. The Sound of Music is a classic. It's a story with a beautiful message that speaks across all generations. What a joy it is for us to bring this timeless tale to the stage in our own community," said Michael Vojvodich, director and instructor of Broadway Bound. Vojvodich's credits include title roles in Jesus Christ Superstar and Jekyll and Hyde, and collaborations with musical theater legends such as Jerry Herman, Susan Egan, Michael McElroy and Marvin Hamlisch.
The Broadway Bound program at Studio One's Summerlin Dance Academy is the first of its kind in Las Vegas not only to provide its students instruction in acting technique, singing and dancing, but also to offer youth in the community opportunities to be cast in full-scale, multi-show productions. Net proceeds from Broadway Bound shows are donated to Broadway Bound Kidz, a non-profit organization, which is committed to the enrichment, entertainment and education of young people in a theater arts and dance environment.
