TITLE: Master Carpenter

THE POSITION

Reporting to the Technical Director (TD), the Master Carpenter is responsible for the construction and installation of all scenic elements for productions and presentations at Studio Theatre. In collaboration with TD, the Master Carpenter will help direct part-time scene shop employees and apprentices/fellows in the execution and installation of scenic elements. They may also assist in shop organization, maintenance, and suggested improvements. This position requires a highly capable carpenter with demonstrated experience accomplishing complicated projects and detailed finish carpentry.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Act as Master Carpenter on all shows presented at Studio Theatre.



Develop a complete and thorough understanding of all drawings and paperwork for each production and assist in the dissemination of that information.



Collaborate with the TD to plan and schedule workflow for construction and installation of scenic elements.



Foster organization and communication in the scenic department with the Technical Director.



Collaborate with the Technical Director and scene shop staff to solve production challenges.



Collaborate with the Technical Director to organize, schedule and maintain the function, cleanliness, and safety of shop, storage areas, and theatre spaces.



Assist in overseeing the safe and effective construction of shop projects, and lead overhire and the Technical Direction Fellow through the process.



Help train the Technical Direction Apprentice/Fellow in construction techniques and safe and efficient work habits.



Attend Studio related meetings as necessary



Participate in Studio Theatre’s on-going anti-racism work.



Other duties as assigned.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Significant physical needs - able to lift upward of 75lbs



Comfort working on ladders up to 12 feet.



Ability to work on lifts and ladders preferred.



Comfort working in loud or bright environments.



Flexibility to work weekends and evenings on critical weeks.



Possess a valid driver’s license (preferred but not required)



WORK ENVIRONMENT

Loud noises and bright lights



Exposure to adhesives, coatings, and other similar chemicals as well as dust and debris



Moderate work on a 20-foot high tension grid



Interfacing with vendors



Irregular schedules with long hours during tech and preview weeks



SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Studio Theatre is seeking an individual with considerable talent, passion for the theatre, and ability to advance institutional aims. We expect a candidate will have:



Comfort with and working knowledge of basic shop tools.



Working knowledge of finish carpentry and installation techniques



Comfort producing scenery from standard theatrical drawings.



Ability to monitor needs and inform supervisors accordingly.



Knowledge of regular theatrical practices



Creative problem solving

COMPENSATION:

This position is a full-time salaried non-exempt position with an annualized salary between $45,000 and $49,000.



Studio Theatre offers a generous benefit package including medical with a partial employer contribution and a funded HRA, dental, and vision insurance and FSA; long-term disability insurance; life insurance; 401K with an employer match; and commuter benefits. Studio Theatre time off policies include ten paid holidays, five floating holidays, separate sick leave, and annual vacation leave accrual starting at ten days for new hires.



SCHEDULE: Studio Theatre’s production hours are Monday thru Friday 8am to 4pm. Studio Theatre’s remote work policy allows certain positions to work remotely up to two days a week plus exceptions on a case-by-case basis; however, this position works primarily on-site. Due to the nature of live entertainment, all positions may require some evening and weekend work.



IRREGULAR SCHEDULE NOTE: During tech and preview weeks, this position often works 12-hour days, six days a week. These long days do include breaks and downtime.
