Scene Shop Supervisor/Part Time

Responsibilities

Execute, construct, and install scenery and scenic properties for all productions. Construct scenery from design and construction specifications provided by scenic designers and Technical Director. In collaboration with and under the supervision of the Executive Director, determine the best way to construct, rig, and install stage scenery in order to realize the scenic designs for simultaneous productions, that will assure quality, paint-ready scenery. Analyze the stresses and loads on scenic elements to ensure the safety and structural integrity of the completed set and all rigging systems. Strive to ensure that work is of the highest professional standards.
Review and evaluate in consultation with the Executive Director the working drawings for construction, rigging, and installation for issues and concerns. Be able to offer solutions and feedback on such issues. In consultation with Technical Director, schedule construction projects and volunteer labor crew. Order materials as directed. Apply paint and other simple paint treatments to finished scenery when necessary and appropriate as determined by the Production. Attend production meetings as directed. Participate in all strikes.
Responsible for daily maintenance of scene shop; ensure the orderly storage of all equipment, scenic materials, and supplies. Assist in maintaining the scene shop in a neat, orderly and safe condition. Participate in daily clean up. Recommend expenditures for equipment. Assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of the backstage areas, including, but not limited to, backstage proper, rigging system and assorted storage areas.
Supervise volunteers and employees and ensure that all employees meet all safety requirements.


Required Qualifications

Must have working knowledge of (or can quickly learn) environmental Health and Safety (chemical inventory, shop safety manual, shop inspections, personal safety equipment, staff safety training). Must have knowledge or willing to learn theater policies and guidelines, including some building codes, OSHA, Fire Marshall, etc.
Knowledge in the field of scenic art and painting, scenic construction and fabrication for the theater, including, but not limited to knowledge of techniques of scenic carpentry and soft-goods construction, rigging and properties regarding construction. Additional knowledge of tool use and maintenance specific to the scene and paint shops, and theater facility.

Scenic Construction:
Standard techniques and practices of scenic construction including: carpentry and scenic carpentry; knowledge of hand and power tool, and stationary power tool operation; jig construction; sewing and construction of soft goods and scenic drops; furniture building; welding and metal working of steel and aluminum; fabrication in other media (e.g. plastics, concrete, copper-mesh); electrical wiring; safe lifting; drafting.

Rigging:
Operation of theatrical rigging equipment including: counter-weight purchase systems hanging and flying of scenery and/or lighting equipment.



Ability to lift up to 100 lbs.
Demonstrated problem solving skills.
Ability to supervise and delegate.
Ability to prioritize competing needs over time between short (production based) and long term (organizational) goals.
Effective oral communication and interpersonal skills.
Can work independently
Demonstrated time management skills.
Can teach and train.


Salary & Benefits

Hourly rate will be commensurate with experience within the range of $31.58 - $33.82 (stepped rates).
