ABOUT STUDIO THEATRE

Since its founding in 1978, Studio Theatre has been based in the historic neighborhood of Logan Circle in Washington DC. Inspired by the world around us, Studio brings personal, political plays to audiences across the Washington metropolitan area. Studio’s mission combines a commitment to artistic craftmanship with the connective power of live theatre: “To produce exceptional contemporary theatre in deliberately intimate spaces, fostering a more thoughtful, more empathetic, and more connected community, in Washington, DC and beyond.”

Recognized by the DC Council, the city’s main governing body, as “a pioneer in launching Washington, DC’s theatre into prominence in the American theatre of the 21st century,” Studio presents a diverse roster of thought-provoking contemporary plays featuring an array of local, national, and international theatre artists. Each season, Studio produces seven to nine productions of contemporary drama, including one to two new plays and commissions artists, particularly those early in their careers, to develop new works that will shape the field for years to come. We also aim to be an engaged member of our community—investing in ongoing partnerships with civic, social, and educational organizations—and nurture the next generation of arts leaders through a season-long professional development apprenticeship program.

THE POSITION

Reporting to the Technical Director (TD), the Assistant Technical Director (ATD) is responsible for supporting the TD in the execution of all scenic elements for productions and presentations at Studio Theatre. In collaboration with the TD, the ATD oversees the scenic shop, organizing and maintaining the shop space, managing sourcing, procurement and purchasing of supplies, tools, and scenic elements, and training and leading shop staff. Additionally, this position will represent the department for technical needs on event rentals and special presentations hosted at Studio Theatre. This position will assist in supervising part-time scene shop employees and apprentices.

The position is full time and requires some weekend and evening work in order to support technical rehearsals, productions, and events. This position primarily works onsite.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide positive leadership, organization, and communication over the entire scene shop in conjunction with the Technical Director.

• Collaborate with the Technical Director and scene shop staff to solve production challenges.

• Collaborate with the Technical Director to organize, schedule and maintain the function and cleanliness of shop, storage areas, and theatre spaces

• Assist in the production of drawings and paperwork. Develop a complete and thorough understanding of all drawings and paperwork for each production and assist in the dissemination of that information.

• Oversee the safe and effective construction of shop projects, and lead overhire and the Technical Direction Apprentice through the process.

• Help train the Technical Direction Apprentice on construction techniques and safe and efficient work habits

• Maintain a clean and safe working environment in the Scene Shop and performance spaces.

• Participate in meetings related to the Studio season as assigned

• Participate in Studio Theatre’s on-going anti-racism work.

• Other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Studio Theatre is seeking an individual with considerable talent, passion for the theatre, and ability to advance institutional aims. We expect a candidate will have:

• Excellent carpentry skills including the ability to build a variety of theatrical set pieces quickly and accurately.

• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work on projects both on an individual basis and in a group.

• Experience with drafting/CAD preferred.

• Ability to read and build based off construction drawings.

• Knowledge and experience with theatrical rigging.

• Knowledge and experience with MIG welding.

• Knowledge of theatrical steel construction techniques.

• Ability to manage over hire, apprentice, and intern carpenters.

• Ability to lift 75lbs multiple times throughout the day.

• Ability to work on lifts and ladders preferred.

• Comfort working in loud or bright environments.

• Flexibility to work weekends and evenings on critical weeks

• Possess a valid driver’s license.

COMPENSATION:

This position is a full-time salaried non-exempt position with an annualized salary of $48,000 and up.

Studio Theatre offers a generous benefit package including medical with a partial employer contribution and a funded HRA, dental, and vision insurance and FSA; short-term and long-term disability insurance; life insurance; 401K with an employer match; and commuter benefits. Studio Theatre time off policies include ten paid holidays, five floating holidays, separate sick leave, and annual vacation leave accrual starting at ten days for new hires.

Studio Theatre’s administrative hours are Monday thru Friday 10am to 6pm. Studio Theatre’s remote work policy allows certain positions to work remotely up to two days a week plus exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Due to the nature of live entertainment, all positions may require some evening and weekend work.
