Review: THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE-DAME at Shiki Theatre Company
Majestic Choral Music and Powerful Performances Bring Disney’s Epic Musical to Life
Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Disney Theatrical Group’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a powerful musical that explores the fate of Quasimodo and the complex human relationships surrounding him in 15th-century Paris. Set against the backdrop of Notre Dame Cathedral, the story delves into themes of love, prejudice, and acceptance.
The score features music by Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast) and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked). Enriched by soaring choral arrangements and a sweeping orchestral sound, the production invites audiences to reflect on the timeless question of what it truly means to be human. It remains one of Shiki Theatre Company’s most acclaimed productions.
Quasimodo lives in the bell tower of Notre Dame Cathedral, where he has been raised since childhood by the archdeacon Frollo. Looking out over the city from above, he dreams of the day he might finally experience the world beyond the cathedral walls.
With only the bells and stone statues for company, Quasimodo spends his days in solitude. But an unexpected encounter sets into motion a chain of events that will change his life forever.
The curtain rises on a dimly lit cathedral, where faint rays of sunlight filter through the darkness, quietly foreshadowing the epic story about to unfold. Dominating center stage is a massive bell, an unmistakable symbol of the production. As Quasimodo throws the full weight of his body into ringing it, the audience can almost feel its tremendous heft.
The opening number, “The Bells of Notre Dame,” immediately establishes the musical’s breathtaking scale. Layer upon layer of choral voices builds into an overwhelming wall of sound, each crescendo seeming impossible to surpass before rising to an even greater intensity. The result is a thrilling opening that completely immerses the audience in the world of the musical.
Quasimodo’s heartfelt rendition of “Out There” is another standout moment. His crystal-clear vocals capture both the innocence of the character and his desperate longing to experience life beyond the cathedral walls. The emotional performance moved many audience members to tears.
The atmosphere shifts dramatically as the stage transforms into the bustling streets of Paris. The solemn, sacred atmosphere of the cathedral gives way to a vibrant city full of life, creating a striking contrast that becomes a defining feature of the production. Emerging into this lively world is Esmeralda, whose graceful dancing and rich, powerful vocals command the audience’s attention while bringing remarkable vitality to the stage.
Near the end of Act One, Frollo’s “Hellfire” stands out as a defining moment of the production. The performance vividly conveys both his inner torment and his overwhelming authority, creating a chilling intensity that leaves the audience holding its breath.
Act Two continues to impress through the powerful ensemble work of the gypsies, whose unified voices beautifully reflect their unwavering solidarity. “Someday,” sung by Esmeralda and Phoebus as they face what may be their final moments, is filled with hope for a better future despite overwhelming despair, making it an emotionally devastating highlight of the musicals.
The execution scene gains remarkable realism through the use of genuine flaming torches. Combined with the score’s mounting tension, the sequence creates an almost suffocating sense of urgency. When Quasimodo finally stands up to Frollo, the moment powerfully reveals the inner strength that has defined him all along.
The finale fills the theatre with majestic choral harmonies, bringing the audience to an emotional conclusion.
The choir and ensemble are unquestionably among the production’s greatest achievements. Their extraordinary vocal precision and breathtaking power create a sound unlike anything else on stage. Equally impressive is the way each scene change transforms not only the set but the entire atmosphere of the theatre, drawing the audience ever deeper into the story.
With its soaring score, magnificent staging, and deeply committed performances, The Hunchback of Notre Dame stands as one of Shiki Theatre Company’s finest productions.
