THE DROWSY CHAPERONE Opens Tonight at Alhambra Theatre & Dining

By:

The Alhambra Theatre & Dining will open its first-ever production of the Tony and Drama Desk Award winning The Drowsy Chaperon tonight, October 22.

The Drowsy Chaperone is a musical, and a parody of American musical comedy of the 1920s. The story is about a middle-aged, asocial musical theater fan as he plays the record of his favorite musical, the (fictional) 1928 hit The Drowsy Chaperone. The show comes to life onstage as he wryly comments on the music, story, and actors. The Drowsy Chaperone debuted in 1998 at The Rivoli in Toronto and opened on Broadway on May 1, 2006. The show was nominated for multiple Broadway (2006) and London (2008) theatre awards, winning five Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards. The show has had major productions in Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, London, and Japan, as well as two North American tours.

The concept that the audience is listening to the musical on an old LP record is used throughout the show. As The Man in the Chair listens to the show, he is torn between his desire to absorb every moment of the show as it unfolds versus his need to insert his personal footnotes and his extensive-but-trivial knowledge of musical performances and actors, as he frequently brings the audience in and out of the fantasy. As the show goes on, through his musings about the show, more of his personal life is revealed, until, as the record ends, he is left again alone in his apartment - but still with his record of a long-beloved show to turn to whenever he's blue.

The Drowsy Chaperone will run at the Alhambra tonight, October 22 through November 23, 2014. Show time is 8:00 PM for evening shows. Doors open at 5:45 PM and dinner will be served until 7:30 PM. Matinees on Saturday are at 1:15 PM. Doors open at 11:00 AM and brunch starts at 11:15 AM. Sunday matinee is at 2:00. Doors open at noon and the meal starts at 12:15 PM. Group sales are available.
