Demetrio, a citizen of Modon, had a son named Lidio and a daughter called Santilla, born as twins. They were so similar in shape and manners that if it were not that they dressed differently, no one could tell them apart. They lost their father at the age of six, when the Turks captured Modon and burned it down, killing as many of its citizens as they could find in the streets. Fannio, the twins’ servant, saved Santilla by dressing her as a boy and calling her Lidio – thinking that her brother had been killed by the Turks.

Santilla and Fannio fled from Modon, but along the way they were captured and taken to Constantinople. A Florentine merchant named Perillo ransomed the two and took them with him to Rome, where they lived in his house for many years. And today Perillo has decided to give his daughter in marriage to Santilla, called by everyone Lidio and believed by everyone to be a boy.

The real Lidio escaped from Modon with his servant Fessenio, and settled in Tuscany. And just before turning eighteen he moved to Rome, where he fell in love with Fulvia, Calandro’s wife. She returned his love, and he visited her several times disguised as a woman – so that they could celebrate their love freely.

After being mistaken for one another many times – as you shall see shortly – Lidio and Santilla finally meet and joyfully recognize each other.
