Rain Pryor's PASS THE MATZO to Have Industry Reading at Open Jar Studios
Rain Pryor’s Pass the Matzo will be presented in a private industry reading, featuring a post-show discussion with the playwright.
A private, invite-only industry presentation of will take place for Pass the Matzo, a funny and moving new play by award-winning playwright, actress, and jazz vocalist Rain Pryor (Head of the Class, Fried Chicken and Latkes).
Following its initial development for television under the late industry legend Norman Lear, Pryor has reclaimed this deeply personal narrative for the stage. With an Off-Broadway run currently in discussion, the production team—comprising seasoned film and theatre executives—invites fellow industry professionals to this pivotal next step in the play’s journey.
The reading will take place on Monday, June 15, 2026 at Open Jar Studios. Doors open at 5:30 PM | Curtain at 6:00 PM. The event will feature a post-presentation talk-back with Rain Pryor and the company.
Set against the ritual of a Passover Seder, Pass the Matzo unites the Bergers (Jewish) and The Johnsons (Black American). At the eye of the storm is Liza, the daughter of Sharon Berger and Leon Johnson, who serves as the "mixed-race token" in a room simmering with cultural misunderstandings and long-held resentments.
As the matzo is passed, the dialogue pivots between intimate family drama and the systemic ghosts of redlining, the war on drugs, and persistent antisemitism. Amidst the friction, the clock is ticking: Leon is terminally ill, and this Seder represents his final act of "parting the sea" to reach his daughter with the truth.
