The pandemic has not only had a deep impact on the entertainment industry from a purely financial perspective, the pandemic has also brought into stark relief many of the inequalities that have existed just below the surface for a long time - and as more regions make the move toward reopening, more questions continue to emerge within the industry of how companies should function when they do reopen. This week, we've got stories about rooting out systemic racism, how we can better open doors for students of color in the arts, and the need to root out the many elements of a hostile work environment within the performing arts.

The Young Vic and Royal Court Enter Two-Year Process to Root Out Systemic Racism

Working with the social enterprise Sour Lemons, both institutions are seeking to achieve "the miracle of equality". Going beyond statements of solidarity, both institutions intend to deeply interrogate their current structures to truly achieve their goals - understanding that the process will be painful, but is vital and necessary to creating a more equitable future in the entertainment industry.

Challenges for Youth of Color in Arts Spaces

Writing for HowlRound, Ilasiea Gray writes about the challenges faced by students of color in navigating arts spaces - from issues of exposure to the arts to not being presented with diverse ensembles on stage. She also touches on the issues faced by teaching artists of color in addressing some of these issues within institutions, and closes by addressing what proper support would look like.

AEA, SAG-AFTRA, and Local 802 AFM Issue Joint Statement on Workplace Harassment

In response to recent stories about unsafe and hostile work environments for workers in the arts, the leaders of three of the largest unions of entertainment workers issued a joint statement calling on their corporate partners to root these issues out of the companies, and to provide guidance to workers who may have experienced these issues in the workplace.

Continuing the trend of open-source spreadsheets, director and playwright Kareem Fahmy has created an open-source spreadsheet for Artistic Directors and Playwrights to assist institutions and artists in broadening their rolodexes of artists to work with.
