Actors' Equity Association has issued a statement about New York Governor Kathy Hochul's new program entitled Saving Performing Arts and Cultural Experiences (NY SPACE). NY SPACE will provide funding for nonprofit performing arts organizations to acquire permanent venues, including theaters.

“NY SPACE is a visionary program that recognizes the importance of the live arts all across New York State," said Brooke Shields, president of Actors' Equity Association. “For our members, it means greater job opportunities as more employers know they can keep their lights on. For the communities where these theatres operate, this is both a cultural enrichment and a financial investment; the average non-profit arts event attendee spends $38.46 in the local economy beyond tickets on their evening out. Furthermore, when employers can put down roots in a physical space, they can invest in those spaces, making for safer workplaces for our members. Thank you to Governor Hochul for this act of leadership. We look forward to seeing this initiative in full swing.”

ACTORS' EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, is the U.S. labor union that represents more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers. Equity endeavors to advance the careers of its members by negotiating wages, improving working conditions and providing a wide range of benefits (health and pension included).
