Phoenix Theatre's BRIGHT STAR Begins Friday
The Phoenix Theatre is starting out the 2018/19 season with a sweet-and-simple yet imaginative musical that will tug at your heart strings. Bright Star is written by Steve Martin, the 2005 recipient of the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Martin's incredible writing meets the beautiful and heartfelt music of folk-rock musician Edie Brickell in this sweet new musical with an old-school sensibility. Set in and around enchanting Asheville, North Carolina, Bright Star captures the vitality and power of the post- World War II with an occasional flashback to the early 1920s. Told with emotional truth through Martin's elegantly simple story and Brickell's marvelous music,
Bright Star shines as a testament to love and the power of compassion to heal.
In 1945 just after World War II where Alice, a determined newspaper writer, meets a
young aspiring writer named Billy whose brazen confidence charms her into encouraging Billy's writing career. That decision leads Alice, Billy, and their community on a remarkable journey of
discovery. Alice and Billy truly demonstrate the possibility of healing regardless of time through laughter, loss, heartbreak, and recovery. A celebration of the human spirit, Bright Star leaves audiences profoundly moved by its touching story and inspiring music.
The Phoenix production is directed by Phoenix founder and longtime artist Suzanne Fleenor. Longtime Phoenix actor Joanne Kehoe returns as assistant director to this production as well as Brent Marty as music director. Carol Worcel choreographs the fabulous dances in Bright Star. Finally, Robert Koharchik designed the rustic scenery and Stephen Hollenbeck built the period show-stopping costumes.
