Indiana University's Annual Spring Concert With Soul Revue Held 5/2

By:

Indiana University's African American Arts Institute will present the annual spring concert by the IU Soul Revue Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m. in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater (114. E. Kirkwood Ave.).

The theme for this year's concert is "Sessions In Love." Songs by artists inncluding Earth Wind & Fire, Lakeside, Taste of Honey, Jill Scott and Beyoncé will focus on the themes of seeking, finding and losing love. Like many journeys of love, said the ensemble's director, Fareed Mahluli, the concert will take the audience through the highs and lows, the desires, discipline and delight of this "ultimate emotion."

The IU Soul Revue has maintained its reputation as one of the finest collegiate popular music ensembles in America. Mahluli -- an experienced performer, composer, producer and engineer -- has been critically praised and has presented at events such as the Sankofa African Dance Company conferences and made recordings that include the poetic Write to Heal. He has served as an instructor and clinician in Florida, Georgia, Illinois and Tennessee and internationally in countries such as Canada and Singapore.

Mahluli, also an adjunct professor in the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies, has performed or recorded with artists including Erykah Badu, Lizz Wright, Oscar Brown Jr., Marcus Roberts, members of Black Entertainment Television's International Association of African American Music and the Stanley Paul Orchestra from the "Oprah Winfrey Show." He was a member of Patti LaBelle's house band at her Philadelphia night club and has performed at the Atlanta Jazz Festival, the Montreux Atlanta Jazz Festival and many other events.

Ticket prices for the show are $17 for adults and $7 for children and students (with a student ID).
