AN ACT OF GOD to Replace THE CHRISTIANS at Phoenix Theatre This Season

By:

Phoenix Theatre of Indianapolis announces a show substitution for the 2016-17 season: This spring's production of The Christians, by Lucas Hnath, will be replaced by David Javerbaum's An Act of God.

This change is made in accordance with the Phoenix's mission to not produce work that has been previously produced in Indianapolis. Due to an error in which the rights to The Christians were released to a local amateur theatre company before being offered to professional companies, this production will be produced in Indianapolis before the Phoenix Theatre's intended timeline.

In order to adhere to its mission, the February-March slot of the Phoenix's season will be filled by An Act of God by David Javerbaum, which closed on Broadway on September 4, 2016.

In this sinfully funny new play, the Almighty and His devoted Angels answer some of the deepest existential questions to ever plague mankind. He's returned to set the record straight... and he's not holding back! The stage play is adapted from Javerbaum's The Last Testament: A Memoir By God, which itself began as "a series of Tweets."

The Phoenix Theatre is Indiana's only professional Contemporary Theatre, and has presented productions to challenge and entertain the Indianapolis community for over 33years. An Equity house, the Phoenix presents the Midwest and Indiana premieres of many popular Broadway and Off-Broadway plays, and has presented more than 90 world premieres. The Phoenix operates the 130-seat proscenium Livia and Steve Russell Stage as well as the 75-seat cabaret-style black box Frank and Katrina Basile Stage. Both venues are housed along with administrative offices in a renovated 1907 church in downtown Indianapolis' historic Chatham Arch neighborhood, part of the Mass Ave Arts and Culture District. The Phoenix Theatre is a founding member of the National New Play Network and the League of Indianapolis Theatres, and is supported by the Indiana Arts Commission, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as local corporate and foundation funders and more than 400 individual donors.
