The second in a season of contemporary dance at NCPA is ‘MeiDhwani’ by Attakkalari from Bangalore. Derived from Tamil & Sanskrit (‘mei’ meaning body and ‘dhwani’ meaning echo or suggestion) the title subtly alludes to ‘echoes of the body’. The production traverses the urban Indian experience, combining the fragility of solitude & the chaos of turmoil, with the fluidity of movement.
Jayachandran Palazhy, Founder and Artistic Director of Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts is an internationally sought after dancer and choreographer at the forefront of the contemporary Indian movement arts scene. Through Attakkalari, he has initiated various interlinked programmes and activities. These include a Diploma in Movement Arts & Mixed Media (the only programme of its kind in India); pioneering research & documentation initiatives; education and outreach; the internationally reputed Attakkalari Repertory Company; TransMedia Technologies which provides stage solutions; and the Attakkalari India Biennial, an international festival of dance and digital arts.
A Physics graduate from Kerala, Jayachandran trained in India in Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Indian folk dances and the martial art form of Kalarippayattu. Moving to London, where he lived for 15 years, Jayachandran trained at the prestigious London Contemporary Dance School and also studied Classical Ballet, Tai Chi, Capoeira and African Dance. During his time in London he established theImlata Dance Company which was supported by Arts Council of England and several UK based national dance agencies. While in the U.K., he was awarded the Barclays New Stage Award for innovative work and selected to represent the UK as an emerging choreographer in an international forum.
“City Maps”, “TransAvatar”, “Purushartha”, “Chronotopia”, “For Pina…” and “MeiDhwani” to name a few of his productions - have received widespread critical acclaim and toured extensively internationally and within India. They have been performed at most of the prestigious dance festivals in Europe as well as China, Japan, South Korea, India and the UK including the Venice Biennale, Bonn Biennial, Monaco Dance Forum, Munich Contemporary Dance Festival, Seoul International Dance Festival, JuliDans Festival in Amsterdam, the Bharat Rang Mahotsav (organized by the National School of Drama, India) as well as venues inLublin, Bologna, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Yokohoma and London to name a few. It is also a matter of great pride that Attakkalari was invited by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, to perform at Rastrapathi Bhavan, New Delhi to mark a diplomatic exchange between India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA summit).
