Clements Theatre Asks Whats Your Damage? with HEATHERS THE MUSICAL (High School Edition) Light Approach to Dark Comedy that Shines Light on Real Teen IssuesClements Theatre invites audiences to experience their farcical take on a teen angst-filled dark comedy Heathers the Musical (High School Edition), January 30-February 1, 2020. The show will be a high energy production filled with stellar vocal performances that showcase the depth of the incredible young talent at Clements, while shining a light on some very real issues that teens face including bullying, violence, pressure to fit in, teen suicide and more. The production also highlights the incredible technical expertise and innovation of the Clements Theatre crew with its student-made sets, a variety of special effects and artistic backdrops.Written by Kevin Murphy and Laurence OKeefe, and licensed with Samuel French, Heathers the Musical (High School Edition) is the darkly delicious rock-and-roll satire of the high school social experience that will have special appeal for the the Clements High School student body and beyond. The musical tells the story of Veronica Sawyer (Julia DeLise, Junior), a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High. Veronica soon falls in love with the dangerously handsome new kid, J. D. (John Heeke, Junior). Are the Heathers (Laura Mia, Senior; Victoria Vargas, Senior; and Hannah Edwards, Senior) the right friends for Veronica and is J.D. the boy she thinks he is? Clements Theatre will deliver an edgy, culturally relevant production with the PG-13 musical exploring contemporary teenage torments and social cravings. Dynamic directorial duo Gavin Mundy and Tim Sperlak feel the material truly fits the trials and tribulations of most teenagers albeit in an over-the-top fashion. Its so important for young actors to truly identify with the characters and plots they are portraying, Mr. Mundy stated. Heathers the Musical (High School Edition) is an obviously satirical take on the very real internal and external struggles young people face daily. And while some of the content is heavy, I am proud we have opened the door to to have some very frank and poignant conversations. I know our performers and crew have created a production that truly reflects their passion and their boundless youthful energy. Audiences are going to want to see it more than once.PUSHING TECHNICAL BOUNDARIES AND BUILDING BUZZClements Theatre is pushing boundaries with this musical production in ways that have never been done on the Fort Bend ISD stage before. Adrian Pacini, a senior at Clements who is a nationally award-winning filmmaker and 2018 UIL Texas State Champion in Film, is leading a special tech operations team that includes Aneesa Patel (Senior, Art Director) and Michael Mitchell (Senior, Tech Director). The production includes special effect concepts that work in tandem with the script to tell the story of Heathers the Musical (High School Edition) in a ground-breaking never-before-seen way that will undoubtedly be memorable for audiences.Clements Theatre is not only taking a turn in the technology used in its productions. The troupes publicity team has created a new Twitter account (@ClementsTheatre) where the public can go for all Theatre department news and events. After selling out every performance of their Fall play, The Taming of the Shrew, which also won accolades at the Texas State Thespian Convention and Renaissance Festival, the Clements Theatre publicity team knew they needed to find innovative ways to reach current and future fans, so they are in the midst of designing a comprehensive public relations campaign that incorporates diverse media and operates across several media platforms. All performances of Heathers the Musical (High School Edition) January 30-February 1 at 7PM and February 1 at 2PM will be in the Clements High School Auditorium. Tickets start at $10 and can be purchased online at https://clementshs.booktix.com.
