"West Side Story" takes center stage at The Grand 1894 Opera House Sunday, April 13 for two high-energy performances at 2 and 7 pm. As an updated version of "Romeo and Juliet", "West Side Story" tells the heartwarming tale of an unspeakable love between Tony and Maria, whose families are members of two rival gangs. Sponsored in part by The Galveston Daily News, Sunny 99.1, and The William J. and Merri S. Edwards Charitable Gift Fund, West Side Story delivers one of Broadway's best dance-driven musicals.
The original plot was presented to Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents in 1947 by Jerome Robbins, who proposed a conflict between an Irish-American Roman Catholic family and a Jewish family living on the east side of Manhattan. Not interested in the idea of "lyric theatre" the piece was shelved for almost five years. Laurents met with Bernstein in Hollywood and the conversation turned to the recent phenomenon of juvenile delinquent gangs. Bernstein suggested they rework the original story and establish the conflict between rival gangs in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City, the Sharks and the Jets. And as they say ..."the rest is history".
Five decades have not dimmed the extraordinary choreography or the score that pulsates throughout. The Bernstein and Sondheim score includes Something's Coming, Tonight, America, Maria, I Feel Pretty and Somewhere. You won't want to miss out on this spectacular musical filled with great actors, terrific songs, awesome dance numbers and a beautiful love story.
