TAO: SEVENTEEN SAMURAI Drummers to Play the Grand This February

By:

The Grand 1894 Opera House presents TAO: Seventeen Samurai, Friday, February 26, 2016 at 8 pm. Tickets may be purchased at The Grand's Box Office, 2020 Postoffice Street, by calling 409.765.1894, 800.821.1894, or online at www.thegrand.com.

Direct from their sold-out world premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, TAO presents its latest artistic triumph, Seventeen Samurai, combining amazing athleticism, striking contemporary costumes, innovative choreography, and explosive Japanese drumming. Tao was eestablished in 1993 as a drum and dance ensemble that combines Japanese Martial Arts Drumming traditions with Korean, Maori, and Indonesian influences. Its performances showcase traditional works and modern compositions created by members of the troupe. They train in the Kuj?, ?ita"Kuj? Highlands on Kyushu - Japan's third largest island. The strenuous physical demands of the Tao performance style require that members of its ensemble also train as athletes.

Tao's performances have critics raving about its extraordinary precision, energy, and stamina. With hundreds of sold-out shows and more than six million spectators, TAO has proven the magnetic appeal of modern entertainment based on the timeless, traditional art of Japanese drumming. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and Texas Commission on the Arts.

For ticket prices and more information, call The Grand's box office at 409.765.1894, 800.821.1894, or visit The Grand's web site at www.thegrand.com. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Grand 1894 Opera House is located at 2020 Postoffice Street in Galveston's historic downtown Cultural Arts District and is recognized as "The Official Opera House of the State of Texas."
