Bayou City Theatrics to Present JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, 4/17-5/3

By:

The album of the epic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber (composer) and Tim Rice (lyricist) was released in 1970 and topped the Billboard Pop Albums. With their rebellious approach to a series of events that changed the world, the collaboration shook the foundation of the Broadway stage in 1971. Jesus Christ Superstar quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. This spring, Bayou City Theatrics will bring their riveting rendition of this spectacular show to downtown Houston. BCT promises to deliver their unique design aesthetics to a show that was cutting-edge in the 1970's. Jesus Christ Superstar runs April 17 through May 3 at The Kaleidoscope.

Told through the eyes of Judas Iscariot (Colton Berry), Jesus Christ Superstar recounts the final days of Jesus Christ (Tyler Galindo). Named as "the Son of God" and "King of the Jews" by his followers, Jesus becomes the center of mounting tension with the High Priest Caiaphas, (Jayson Kolbicz) and the chief priests. The council sets into motion a ploy to "crush him completely" as a stride toward the greater good of the Roman Empire. Judas is drawn into their plans, as he develops an increasing jealousy for former prostitute, Mary Magdalene (Tori Shoemaker), and her love for Jesus. Betrayal, regret, doubt and conflict ensue as Jesus is resisted and tested by the Roman Empire, and eventually his own followers.

Bursting with stunning visuals and smashing performances by local artists, BCT's ensemble of performers grabs the material at the roots and tackles the musical with soulful gusto. Rocking out as apostles, priests and others, Jesus Christ Superstar features Laz Estrada (Pontius Pilate), Travis Ammons (King Herod), Agnes "Aggie" B., Erica Bundy, Ashley Carfine, Alex Domingue, Katrina Ellsworth, Ryan Frenk, Trevor Grace, Luke Hamilton, Michelle Mayo, Scott Mills, and Whitney Zangarine.

Jesus Christ Superstar is directed and designed by Colton Berry, with music direction by Jane Volke and choreography by Luke Hamilton. The production runs Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 7:00 p.m., April 17 through May 3, at Bayou City Theatrics' downtown theatre, The Kaleidoscope (705 Main Street, Suite B, at Capitol). Tickets are available for purchase ($35-$40) at www.BayouCityTheatrics.com, or by calling the Box Office 832.817.8656. Tickets are available at the door, although BCT encourages purchasing tickets in advance to secure seating in their intimate venue. Convenient cash parking is located less than one block away at the corner of Capitol & Fannin, in the SAKS' garage.
