4th Wall Theatre Company (formerly Stark Naked Theatre Company) opens its 2016-2017 season on September 9th with Sam Shepard's Tony-nominated masterpiece, True West-a modern American classic exploring themes of sibling rivalry, art as commerce, and what it means to 'be a man.' Like a runaway train, this dark comedy about two brothers and their mutual resentment takes audiences on a thrill ride into the dark side of the human psyche, with laughs and unexpected moments of revelation along the way. In its world premiere, the San Francisco Chronicle noted that True West is "clear, funny, naturalistic. It's also opaque, terrifying, surrealistic. If that sounds contradictory, you're on to one aspect of Shepard's winning genius-the ability to make you think your watching one thing while at the same time he's presenting another."

A finalist for the 1983 Pulitzer Price in Drama, True West was famously revived by Steppenwolf Theatre in both Chicago and New York with John Malkovich and Gary Sinise portraying the lead roles, and more recently by New York's Circle in the Square, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly, alternating the lead roles. During Steppenwolf's revival, Malkovich shared this insight about the play: "People kept saying True West is so commercial, but I think it's a more personal play than most of his. Shepard, like Lee [the drifter brother], defies all the things we're told we have to do to be successful...Lee is the side of Shepard that's always being strangled but never quite killed."

Directed by Kim Tobin-Lehl, 4th Wall Theatre's production of True West features a strong ensemble cast comprised of Philip Lehl, Nick Farco, and Drake Simpson and the incomparable Kevin Rigdon in charge of set and light design. Over the course of his illustrious 36-year career, Rigdon has designed more than 360 productions and received extensive recognition for his artistry, including two Tony Award nominations, two American Theatre Wing Design Awards, and four Drama Desk Award nominations, among others. Currently the Alley Theatre's Associate Director for Design and the head of the Graduate Design program at the University of Houston, Rigdon began his career as the Resident Designer for the renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. Joining the theatre at its inception in 1974, Ridgon designed over 110 Steppenwolf productions, including its acclaimed revival of True West.

Reflecting on his approach to designing True West for 4th Wall Theatre, Rigdon noted that "this is the first time I have revisited the play since the Steppenwolf production. It is interesting going back to it, digging into the play. Like any show I do, I always go into it as though it is the first time. It is important to me that I don't impose a previous production on the project today. I am working with a different group of artists, and I am certainly a much different person and artist today than I was 34 years ago. I like to think that I have grown artistically and intellectually over all this time. That said, so much came back so quickly when I went back to the script. Was it hard to read the play and not see Gary [Sinise] and John [Malkovich]? Sure, but more importantly, I saw the space we are going to work in. I saw Drake [Simpson] in that space bringing what he has to offer to [the role of] Lee. For me, the starting point is the ground plan - the relationship of the actors and the environment to the audience and vice versa. One aspect of the Steppenwolf production I was never satisfied with was what we saw of the world outside the house. This time around I think that I have a better understanding of what the world outside the house means to the characters and the play. We will see if I am right."

With the genius of Sam Shepard in the experienced hands of 4th Wall Theatre Company (formerly Stark Naked Theatre Company), it's certain that Houston audiences are in for an exhilarating ride. Don't miss True West, directed by Kim Tobin-Lehl and starring Philip Lehl, Nick Farco, and Drake Simpson, with set and lighting design by two-time Tony nominee Kevin Rigdon.
