Broadway Palm is presenting a brand new jukebox musical, The Sounds of 1967. The concept and story are from the inventive Amy Marie McCleary who is also the director and choreographer.
Poof! Just like that we are in the land of white go-go boots, bell bottoms, and peace signs.
Sydney Noller plays Carrie Ann who has two wishes: play music and get out of Ohio. To the dismay of her parents, played by Rachel Maselek and Luke Collins, she takes off cross country with fellow musician Guy, played by Cameron Nies.
Noller gives off Olivia Newton John vibes, so it wasn’t surprising to see in her bio that she has portrayed Sandy in Grease elsewhere. She has a strong, clear voice that is a pleasure to listen to.
Nies strums an electric guitar and projects just the right rock start attitude.
Maselek and Collins are fun to watch, and Collins in particular has some nice dance moves.
When the young couple travels to Detroit, they join forces with Mykal Sanders as Earl. His renditions of Motown numbers are right on target. In Act Two, the musical threesome becomes a foursome with the addition of Rachel Omotoso as Lesley on legendary Carnaby Street in London. She has strong Stage Presence and gives an extra spark to the performance.
Rounding out the cast, Nicole Esposito very nearly steals the show by channeling Janis Joplin.
The music throughout is familiar and the atmosphere is joyful. All that was missing was The Beach Boys, but maybe McCleary has a sequel up her sleeve.
The Sounds of 1967 runs through June 20. For tickets, call 239.278.4422.
