How to Play

Rules & Scoring for the BroadwayWorld Producer Fantasy Game

Overview

The BroadwayWorld Producer Fantasy Game lets you build a team of 6 Broadway shows and earn points based on their real weekly box office performance. Bonus points come from awards season nominations and wins, plus weekly Predictive Q&A Fantasy Forecast bonus questions. All BroadwayWorld members compete on a single global leaderboard.

How It Works

  1. Draft 6 Shows — During the draft window, pick any 6 new Broadway productions that opened this season. Shows are not exclusive — multiple players can draft the same show.
  2. Earn Points Weekly — Every week, your shows earn fantasy points based on their reported box office grosses and capacity percentages.
  3. Watch for New Openings — As new productions open throughout the season, they become available. Use your drop/add transactions to swap in hot new shows.
  4. Awards Bonuses — When Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle nominations and wins are announced, your shows earn bonus points.
  5. Predictive Q&A — Answer our weekly Fantasy Forecast bonus questions for up to +5 bonus points per correct answer.
  6. Climb the Leaderboard — Total points across all weeks determine your ranking. The player with the most points at season's end is the champion!

Show Eligibility

Only new Broadway productions that opened during the current season are eligible. Long-running shows that opened before the season are not available.

This keeps the competition focused on new work and makes roster strategy more dynamic — as the season progresses, newly announced productions will open and become available to add to your roster.

Tip: Keep an eye on upcoming openings! A highly anticipated new musical or play could be a game-changer. Save a drop/add transaction so you can swap in a hot new show when it starts reporting grosses.

Earn +5 bonus points for accurate answers to our weekly questions.

If a show doesn't report grosses for a week (dark week, holiday, etc.), it scores 0 points. Surge/slide is not calculated for a show's first week.

Two Games, Three Leaderboards

Your points come from two different games, and we track them separately so you can shine at either one:

  • Producer score — your box-office game: weekly grosses + awards your rostered shows earn, minus any points you spend buying extra drops.
  • Forecast score — your prediction game: points won on the weekly Fantasy Forecast questions.
  • Combined score — Producer + Forecast added together. This is the overall championship ranking.

The leaderboard lets you switch between the Overall, Producers, and Forecasters boards — so the sharpest predictor can top the Forecasters board even if their roster is having a rough season, and vice versa.

Awards Scoring

Bonus points are awarded when shows receive nominations and wins from major award bodies:

Award Body Nom Big 5 Win Best*
Tony Awards +12 +8 +25 +15
Drama Desk +5 +10
Drama League +4 +8
Outer Critics Circle +3 +5

* Extra points for winning Best Musical or Best Play. Tony Big 5: Best Musical, Best Play, Best Revival of a Musical, Best Revival of a Play, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical.

Roster Management

Your Roster

  • Your roster consists of 6 Broadway shows.
  • All shows must be new productions that opened during the current season.

Drop/Add Transactions

Every drop is a swap: you drop a show and add a replacement into the same slot, so your roster always stays at 6 shows. You have several ways to make a move:

  • 1 free drop every week — a fresh free drop/add unlocks each week once that week's grosses are scored. It's use-it-or-lose-it: if you don't use it before the next week's grosses post, it's gone.
  • 3 season drops — on top of the weekly free drop, you get 3 "anytime" drops to use whenever you like before the trade deadline.
  • Free swaps for closed shows — if a show on your roster has closed, you can replace it any time for free. It never uses a drop and isn't limited — even after the trade deadline.
  • Buy extra drops with points — out of free and season drops? You can cash in earned points for up to 3 more. The price escalates (100 pts, 250 pts, 500 pts) and the points are deducted from your total, so spending hurts your leaderboard standing.
  • When you drop a show, its historical points remain in your total, but it stops earning new points.
  • The replacement show only earns points going forward from the week it was added.
  • The game always uses your cheapest move first: a free closed-show swap, then your weekly free drop, then a season drop, and only charges points if that's all that's left.

New Shows & Strategy

New productions open throughout the Broadway season. When a new show opens and starts reporting box office data, it becomes available for your roster.

This creates an ongoing strategic decision: do you hold onto your current lineup, or use a drop/add to swap in a buzzy new opening that could outperform one of your existing picks?

Show Closings

If a show on your roster closes, it keeps all the points it already earned, but it stops scoring. Because a closed show is dead weight, you can swap it out for a free replacement at any time — it doesn't cost a drop or any points, and you can do it even after the trade deadline. Look for the green Free Swap button on your roster.

FAQ

Can multiple people draft the same show?
Yes! Drafting is non-exclusive. Any number of players can have the same show on their roster.
When do weekly scores update?
Scores are calculated each week after Broadway League grosses data is published (typically Monday/Tuesday).
Why can't I draft Hamilton or Wicked?
Only new productions that opened during the current season are eligible. Long-running shows that opened before the season started are not available.
What happens when a new show opens mid-season?
It becomes available immediately! Use your free weekly drop (or one of your 3 season drops) to swap out an underperforming show and add the new one to your roster.
How many shows can I swap each week?
One free drop per week, which unlocks when that week's grosses are scored and expires when the next week's do. You can also spend your 3 season drops, buy extra drops with points, and swap any closed show for free on top of that.
What if a show goes dark for a week?
The show scores 0 points for that week. No surge/slide penalty is applied.
Can I join mid-season?
Yes — you can draft any time the draft window is open. If you join within the first two weeks of the season, your roster is scored from the season's opening week. Join after that and your shows start earning from the week you join, so the earlier you get in, the more weeks you bank.
