BREAKDOWN

OLD JEFF HAMILTON / OLD SAM HOUSTON / ANDREW JACKSON
African-American Male. 60’s-70’s. Tall, strong and dynamic. Compelling orator. Wry sense of humor. Mercurial temperament. Fiercely intelligent.

  • OLD JEFF HAMILTON: In 1936, he is 95 Years old, but could easily pass for 70. The former body man of General Sam Houston, Jeff is now a scholar who has collected the artifacts and documents of this story over a lifetime. A genius of nearly incalculable potential who, due to the circumstances of his birth, has been a slave, janitor and unknown academic. Also plays:
  • OLD SAM HOUSTON: In 1861, he is 70 years old. A dignified, elder statesman with a powerful manner. A mix of deliberation, self-possession and restrained majesty. Also plays:
  • ANDREW JACKSON: In 1832, he is the 65-year-old President of the United States. Embittered by the death of his wife. Aging, in pain and very cunning. He views the world as a chessboard.

Story line: The Trials of Sam Houston takes place in three distinct, and theatrically overlapping, time periods: 1936, 1832 and 1861. The actor who plays the leading role of “Old Jeff Hamilton” in 1936 also plays “Old Sam Houston” in 1861, and President Andrew Jackson in 1832. The actor’s transformations between characters is done with a minimum of makeup and costume changes, but with a clear change of intention and characterization.
