BREAKDOWN
PLOT: The Emperor Jones, a play in 8 scenes, is the story of Brutus Jones, an African American man who kills a man, goes to prison, escapes to a Caribbean island, and sets himself up as emperor. The play recounts his story in flashbacks as Brutus makes his way through the forest in an attempt to escape his former subjects who have rebelled against him and the deeds that haunt him.
Speaking Roles:
Brutus Jones: Black Male (already cast)
Native Woman: 20’s-30’s. Black masked as old woman Caribbean accent
Smithers: 40’s/50’s, White, shifty, Cockney accent
Lem: Black 30’s -40’s. A Native Chief. Caribbean accent
Non speaking chorus roles to be doubled and tripled include: Jeff, Chain Gang, Prison Guard, Slave Auctioneer, Slaves, Congo Witch Doctor, and Crocodile God.
Seeking male and female actors of with strong backgrounds in dance, movement, mask-work, and puppetry. Acrobatics and familiarity in African tribal dance a plus. Actors of multi racial ethnicities particularly encouraged to audition.
