BREAKDOWN

IN THE TRENCHES: A BRAND NEW PARENTING MUSICAL COMEDY

SYNOPSIS: In the Trenches: A Parenting Musical is a new 90 minute sung-through musical comedy in two acts. The show follows the journey of two new parents as they figure out who they are and how to adapt to life with two babies, from birth to first grade. The toddlers are unapologetically played by adults, and while they sometimes act in a child-like manner, their voice is often presented through the parents’ lens: what do grown ups think babies and toddlers would say if they had full grasp of the English language? The score features a wide array of musical styles, from doo-wop to hip hop, Gilbert and Sullivan patter to 80’s rock, Motown to musical theater.

NOTE: Seeking strong singers in a variety of styles (including musical theater, R&B, pop, rock, blues) for all roles. All ethnicities are welcomed and encouraged to audition. Every effort will be made to have a cast that is reflective of the world we live in with regard to racial diversity and gender identification.

SEEKING:

ELLIE (MOM): Female, 30s-40s, Soprano Ab3-G5. Molly Weasley with a hearty dash of Beyonce. The family matriarch and accomplisher of all things. Lover of yoga pants and wine. A little dorky, a little sentimental, a little saucy, a lot badass. Doubles as Jingle Gal.

JAMES (DAD): Male, 30s-40s, Tenor A2-Ab4. Like if Phil Dunphy melded together with Michael Bluth and he listened to a little too much 90s hip hop. Supportive and loving second fiddle to MOM. Inventor of the best (cringiest?) dad jokes, gets misty at the drop of a hat when his kids are involved, and may accidentally drop the occasional F bomb.

BECCA (SINGLE FRIEND): Female, 20s-40s. Alto with belt and riffing A3-D#5. MOM’s best gal pal since high school. Reluctant acceptor of MOM’s decision to get hitched and have kids in lieu of drinks. Probably the reason there’s still a “no smoking” warning in airplane bathrooms. Witty and sarcastic; girlfriend/tolerator of Todd. Doubles as Nosy Lady, Birth Class Attendee, Jingle Gal.

TODD (NARRATOR): Male, 30s-40s, Bari-tenor Bb2-G4. A rock star masquerading by day as a human resources manager. The SINGLE FRIEND’s new boyfriend. Blasts through life with a child-like enthusiasm for cobb salads, cargo shorts, human conception, and really anything other than the dreaded blind double date. Doubles as Narrator, Doctor, Dad Joker, Teacher.

SAM (CHILD 1): Non-binary, teens-20s, Tenor with riffing B2-A4. A la Hedwig (the one with the Angry Inch, not the owl), but trapped in a rugrat’s body. A quintessential first child whose world was rocked when another human infant suddenly appeared in their house. Equal parts loving and cynical, sweet and competitive, inquisitive and reckless. Wants to know if we’re there yet. Doubles as Waiter, Birth Class Instructor.

DOT (CHILD 2): Female, teens-20s, Alto with belt and riffing Eb3-F5. Little Orphan Annie meets Wednesday Addams meets Aretha Franklin. The spunky youngest member of the nuclear family. Often an afterthought, she gets her family’s attention by belting their faces off. Darkly humorous but deeply loving. She’s rubber and you’re glue. Doubles as Nosy Lady, Birth Class Attendee, Jingle Gal.

OFF-STAGE COVER #1: 30s. Covers male and non-binary roles JAMES, TODD, and SAM. Starts rehearsals o/a Aug 12, 2024.

OFF-STAGE COVER #2: 30s. Covers female roles ELLIE, BECCA, and DOT. Starts rehearsals o/a Aug 12, 2024.
