Note: “High” British, Welsh and Cockney accents a huge plus for all characters.

Edward, Prince of Wales:

Late 20s-30s. Charming and handsome. Falls hard for Wallis Simpson and abdicates the throne to be with her. Passionate, stubborn, conflicted – IN LOVE. Baritenor w/dramatic & lyric color.

Wallis Simpson:

Late 20s-30s. Married American woman with whom Edward falls madly in love. Fashionable, elegant, sassy – bit of a Southern belle. Mezzo.

Elsa Maxwell:

Late 30s-50s. Famous party hostess of international acclaim – fun, confident, sometimes brash – but compassionate, too. Alto/character belt.

Lord George (Georgie) Bellimore:

Late 40s-50s. Public relations advisor to the royal family. Condescending to everyone else, and always self-important. Character baritone.

Winston Churchill / King George:

Late 40s-50s. Churchill: Parliament member. Edward’s close/sympathetic confidant. Dazzling personality, powerful presence. King George: Queen Victoria’s grandson. Stern king. Character/legit baritone.

Ernest Simpson:

Late 20s-30s. Wallis’s husband. British/American shipping tycoon. Handsome leading man-type. Watches while his wife is wooed by the future King of England. Through it all, he keeps a stiff upper lip and is always a true gentleman. Lyric baritone.

Stanley Baldwin / Walter Winchell:

Late 30s-50s. Baldwin: Prime Minister of Great Britain. Decides Edward is a liability. Winchell: Wrote a column and broadcasted a radio show with all the news of the day – this is a voiceover of one of his famous broadcasts. Legit baritone.

Queen Mary / Bessie Merryman:

40s-50s: Queen Mary: Edward’s unflinching & strict mother. Determined to preserve the monarchy, and horrified by Edward’s obsession with Wallis -- but always conducts herself with the utmost dignity. Bessie: Wallis’s deep-South Virginian aunt. Loyal & devoted to Wallis. Legit mezzo.
