Seeking:

Ensemble Singers (MF):

All Ensemble characters are 30+ years old. Seeking very strong singers who move well. All should have killer British accents. See EPA notice for more context for the character descriptions that follow. Featured tracks include, but are not limited to …

George, Duke Of York (‘Bertie’) / Sailor / Nightclub Performer / Ensemble:

30s-40s. Legit baritone. Bertie: Edward’s brother, but lacks his charm and charisma. A stutterer. Generally overshadowed by Edward.

The Hon. Nigel Maidenhead / Simon Palmsy / Ensemble:

30s-40s. Character baritenor. Nigel: Elsa Maxwell’s secretary. Well-intentioned – perhaps a bit scattered. Simon:Georgie’s associate. Eager, but with few moral scruples … and a natural snob.

Archbishop Of Canterbury / Neville Chamberlain / Butler / Cabaret Emcee / Ensemble:

Late 40s-60s. Legit baritone. Archbishop: Regards Edward’s plan to marry a divorced woman as a betrayal of the Church. Fancies himself the undisputed spiritual leader of the British people. Chamberlain: Chancellor of the Exchequer. Predicts financial ruin with Edward’s decision.

Miner / Nightclub Performer / Baldwin’s Secretary / Ensemble:

30s-40s. Tenor. Miner: Welsh. Gets the attention of the Prince

Elizabeth, Duchess Of York / Ensemble:

30s-40s. Mezzo soprano. Elizabeth: Bertie’s wife. Has an intense dislike of Wallis. Petty, controlling. Superficially pleasant.

Lady Thelma Furness / Nightclub Performer / Ensemble:

30s. Soprano. Lady Thelma: Beautiful, married American lover of Prince Edward at the time of his meeting Wallis Simpson. Completely self-absorbed.

Newspaper Barker / Nightclub Performer / Ensemble:

30s. Barker: Cockney. Whips the street into a frenzy over the news of the abdication.

Miner’s Wife / Mimi St. Clair / Ensemble:

30s. Chest voice, but not full belt. Miner’s Wife: Begs for help from the Prince. Mimi: Leading nightclub vocal soloist.
