BREAKDOWN

KINGS by Sarah Burgess

Lauren (Female, 30s)
Formerly romantically involved with Kate, now married to the SEC Commissioner. Lobbyist, making serious money. Knows how to play the political game, not hampered by ideals. Rejected by her parents after coming out, she was taken under the wing of Senator McDowell for whom she has also worked. Lives in an expensive old townhouse in Alexandria.

Kate (Female, 30s)
Lauren’s former girlfriend. Also a lobbyist although not as financially successful. Less of a game player, more direct and honest. Yale educated, direct, sometimes rudely so, somewhat feisty, pragmatic but with some ideals intact. Both parents are lawyers. Some level of privilege.

Sydney Millsap (Female, 40s, Black)
Representative for Dallas. Formerly an accountant she entered politics with sincere ideals but has been beaten down somewhat by the demands of fundraising and attending events. A Gold Star widow whose husband was killed in Iraq, she is also bringing up a young son. Dour, serious, dryly humorous occasionally. Decides to challenge the leading candidate for President, Senator McDowell, unprepared for the backlash.

John McDowell (Male, 60s)
Senator for Texas. Long time politician. Avuncular, powerful, humorous, manipulative. Running for President, with the complacent expectation of being unchallenged. Warm and generous but a true politician. Blindsided by an unconventional campaign he nonetheless emerges able to forge a new avenue of influence and continue playing the game.
