Equity audition procedures are NOT in effect. No Equity monitor provided. Producer runs all aspects of the audition.

Need pop/contemporary voices; not legit musical theatre. Please prepare short monologue, comedic or dramatic, and contrasting songs, ie ballad & up-tempo. Be prepared to cold read. Bring sheet music in appropriate key. Bring picture and resume, stapled together.

Sundog Theatre is producing “If You Could See: The Alice Austen Story”, an original musical about a pioneering American photographer and feminist hero whose images recorded America in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. Alice Austen's commitment to live and die by the consequences of her free will and actions defined her life and work.

Alice Austen:

(reads 70s) - Crippled by arthritis, old, poor, from aristocratic family, strong willed, sharp but generous nature, lived by her own rules. Strong singer, Mezzo Soprano with belt. LEAD

Alice Austen:

(18-60 - must span large age range) same as above, but in her youth; full of life. Youthful soprano/belt. LEAD

Gertrude Tate:

(early 30s) - Alice's partner of 50 years, dance teacher, kind, supportive, talkative. Soprano or Mezzo. LEAD

Alice’s Mother/Club Singer/Ensemble:

(20-40) –left by husband, raising Alice, dies young. Will play other parts. Mezzo/Soprano or Alto. Bluesy/Sultry quality.

Matron/Ensemble:

(30-40) - Matron at Poor Farm Hospital, cranky, cold, irritated. Plays other parts.

Mary Whittcomb/Ensemble:

(30-40) - Friend of Alice's, concerned about Alice's lack of conformity. Plays other parts.

Fredrick Talbot/Ensemble:

(early 30-50) - Friend of Alice's, wealthy family, aristocratic, kind, businessman, in love with Alfred. Plays other parts. Tenor/Baritone. Must move well.

Alfred Patterson:

(30-50) - Alice's friend, from aristocratic family, sensitive, inner struggles. Plays other parts. Strong singer. Tenor or Bari/Tenor.

Oliver Jensen:

(30-40) - Editor Life Mag, gets Alice out of poor farm and sees she is recognized for her photos. Plays other parts. Baritone or Bass.

Henry Winthrop:

(early 50s) – Alice’s cousin, wealthy businessman. StrongBari/Tenor, low D, comfortable with falsetto.
