Please prepare a brief song that showcases your voice and acting. Songs in Yiddish preferred, but not required. Bring sheet music in the correct key; accompanist is provided, but may not transpose.
In addition, be prepared to read from sides (in the Yiddish language), which will be provided at the audition. Sides will also be available for download ( from
www.folksbiene.org ) by Monday 3/28/11. A pronunciation guide to standard, transliterated Yiddish and a digital recording (WAV format) of a reading of the sides will also be available at the same website. If auditioning as a possible replacement for male roles, read Berel. If auditioning as a possible replacement for female roles, read Dvoshe or Genendl.

Musical folk tale.
Seeking:
Note: Seeking performers who can speak and sing in Yiddish or German. Nearly all of the show is performed in Yiddish. Actors who show potential for Yiddish facility will be considered. All actors must sing well, have charm and facility for comedy. And all must be able to act/sing in Yiddish.
Berel:
AVAILABLE ROLE. Man, 20 - 30s. The love interest. Sweet, earnest, authentic. Tenor.
Dvoshe:
AVAILABLE ROLE. Woman, 30s - 50s. The maid. Sharp, saucy. Not so bright. Mezzo/alto belter.
Genendl:
AVAILABLE ROLE. Woman, 45-50s. The innkeeper’s wife. Comic character; a Mrs. Lovett-type. Mezzo belter.
The following roles are cast with performers who played them in a previous production. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.
Hershele:
CAST. Man, “ageless” (30–50). Great charm and wit. Vagabond with a heart of gold, yet a brain as sharp as a tack. A real human. Requires a good singer, comic, clown, actor.
Reb Kalmen:
CAST. Man, 50–70. Very rich, yet poor-hearted. A miser.
Tsipke:
CAST. Woman, 20-30s. The other love interest. Ingénue with charm and character.
Stanavoy:
CAST. Somewhat corrupt policeman. Not so bright. Tough.
Bunim:
CAST. Man, 30s. Friend of Berel's. Kind. Game. Does anything to help.
Zaydl:
CAST. Man, 50s+. Innkeeper. Common. Comic character type.
