Breakdown
HERO - (Lead role, Tenor) 28-year-old guy who lives at home with his dad. Works in the family comic book shop. The death of his mother, on the day before his high school graduation, sent his life into a spiral. He is a struggling comic book illustrator who can't get hired by the big comic book companies. He illustrates his day-to-day in a journal, which he keeps private. The world he creates in the pages of his journal is in stark contrast to his boring life. He doesn't go out much. His only friend is Kirk, his cousin. His life is turned upside-down when an old girlfriend comes back into town. His is definitely down on his luck and not a"go getter", but is incredibly likable. Like John Cusack.

JANE - (Principal) 28-year-old schoolteacher. Hero's ex High School girlfriend. Things ended badly and she left town to go to college. Now, ten years later, she is recently divorced and has moved back home after living in Colorado. Now lives with her folks and found a job as a grade school teacher. She runs into Hero and decides it's time to finally apologize for how the relationship ended, although both were at fault for their failed relationship. She is sweet, honest and real, however she is still trying to find her way after her husband cheated and left her. She is"the one" for Hero.

SUSAN - (Principal) 28-30 yrs old. Quirky friend of Jane's. They went to High School together but weren't close then. Now, they work together as teachers. She is wound really tight. Control issues. She is the polar opposite of Kirk, who she ends up marrying.
Music audition ideas- Cyndi Lauper, B-52's, something pop with a simple sense of humor.
KIRK - (Principal) 28-32 yr old. Jack Black-like, but not a carbon copy. He is fearless and willing to try anything with the full knowledge he might fall on his face...and often does. He carries his guitar everywhere he goes. His main job is selling Avon. He is Hero's cousin/best friend. Physically he needs to be different. Fat or really short or really tall, are all great. Tons of confidence.
Music audition ideas- Blues traveler, Tenacious D, any 80's rock band
NATE - (Principal) 12 yrs. old. He is Kirk's little brother. He hangs out at the shop with Al after school. Nate's mom, Al's sister, is single and has to work two jobs to pay the bills. So Al, in many ways, is the only father Nate has. He has incredible knowledge of superheroes and comics. He is a smart-ass. He says things he hears Kirk say, but doesn't really understand the real meaning.
Music audition ideas- anything age/character appropriate but with a rap edge.
AL - (Principal) mid-50s father of Hero. He is a typical Milwaukee guy. Salt of the earth. Owns a comic book shop. Loves everything about superheroes and comics. His wife died ten years ago and he won't date. Lives for Hero, Nate and the shop. His health is not great. He has had a heart attack and during the show dies from a massive stroke. Actor must look mid-50s and needs to have some weight on him. Al doesn't work out. Needs to look like he lives in Wisconsin (lots of beer and cheese).
