BREAKDOWN

Jende Jonga and his wife Neni have recently emigrated from Cameroon to America to try to make a new life for themselves and their young son. Jende gets a job as a chauffeur for an investor at Lehman Brothers and Neni studies to be a pharmacist. When the Great Recession starts to upend the economy, both of them realize that America may not be the place full of hope and promise as they had once thought. Imbolo Mbue masterfully weaves a story of class divide, immigration, and marriage in her remarkable debut novel.

Jende (pronounced Jen-day) Jonga: Cameroonian, 30s. Neni's husband. Chauffer for the Edwards.

Neni (pronounced 'Non-nie') Jonga: Cameroonian, 30s. Jenda's wife. Studying to become a pharmacist.

The African family possesses a pureness, a wide-eyed innocence, a naiveté of the world works, yet they're intelligent, pragmatic, ethical to a fault, hard working, people pleasers, charismatic, day dreamers. They have a ten year old son, Liomi, for whom they make all their sacrifices.

Fatou: African, has lived in NYC for 20 years, 30s, Neni's friend and support. / Leah: American, Clark's Secretary.

Clark Edwards: White, 40s. Cindy's husband. Successful executive at Lehman Brothers Holdings, a large investment bank. Handsome, well groomed, kind and fair employer but negligent husband.

Cindy Edwards: White, 30s-40s. Wife of Clark. Once a trophy wife now struggling with addiction and desperate to keep her family together.

Mighty Edwards: White, 8-10. Clark and Cindy's youngest child. An old-soul, well-behaved and loveable.

Vince Edwards: White, early 20s. Clark and Cindy's eldest child. World traveling son who renounces his privileged upbringing via his youthful self-righteousness.

Bubakar: African, 40s-50s. Cunning Immigration lawyer.

Winston Avera: Cameroonian, late 30s -40s, Jende's cousin who is generous and steadfast. He is lawyer.

Anna: 30s+, Hispanic or European. Edwards' family housekeeper.
