SYNOPSIS

Journey through the wonders of Ancient Egypt as Ramses and Moses, two young men raised together as brothers in a kingdom of privilege, find themselves suddenly divided by a secret past. One must rule as Pharaoh, the other must rise up and free his true people; both face a destiny that will change history forever.

Moses: (Male, age 18 to 39) Playful, but with a soulful core. Ages throughout the show. He begins the show as a devil-may-care young man, a bit of a clown and playboy, secure in his privileged identity as a prince of Egypt. But after his devastating discovery that he was born a slave, he grows into the strong and compassionate leader of the Hebrew people. High Tenor. Vocal range top: A4 - Vocal range bottom: Bb2

Ramses: (Male, age 18 to 39) A prince of Egypt, heir to the throne, who ages throughout the show. He loves his brother Moses, but is also quite competitive with him, since Moses's winning personality continually puts him in the shade. His father expects a great deal from him as the future Pharaoh, and Ramses is wracked by self-doubt. Through trials of great pain over the course of the show, he ultimately becomes a great leader of the Egyptians. Tenor. Vocal range top: A4 - Vocal range bottom: Bb2

Yocheved: (Female, age 20-39) Moses's Hebrew mother. She sets her son afloat in a basket on the Nile in order to save him from the Egyptian soldiers. Sings in Hebrew and English. Alto. Vocal range top: E5 - Vocal range bottom: G3

Queen Tuya: (Female, age 35-55) Regal, wise, deeply loving. She always wanted another son after Ramses was born, and believes Moses was a gift from the gods. Over the course of the show, she changes from being a vibrant, clever, and even playful woman to a broken creature devastated by the loss of her adopted son. Alto. Vocal range top: E5 - Vocal range bottom: G3

Pharaoh Seti: (Male, age 50-69) The Pharaoh of Egypt. Commanding, carries himself with great dignity and authority. As a young man, he brought Egypt back from the brink of civil war. He is a great general and still leads his army into battle. He loves his sons deeply, but he loves Egypt more and everything he does is to protect and preserve his country. Baritone/Bass. Vocal range top: E4 - Vocal range bottom: B2

Hotep: (Male, age 50-65) The High Priest of Egypt. Though pompous and self-important, he is deeply committed to the ancient gods of Egypt and above all fears the heresy of the one god which brought down the previous dynasty. His support is crucial to the well-being of the 18th Dynasty. He despises Moses for his lack of reverence and seeks to preserve the Egyptian hierarchy at all costs. Baritone. Vocal range top: F4 - Vocal range bottom: G#2

Tzipporah: (Female, age 18-39) A Midian princess, fiery and rebellious, who ages throughout the show. She is full of spirit and strength and wants nothing more than for her people to be free. Deeply committed to her family, and eventually to her love for Moses. Must have a thrilling high belt, but also a well-developed and beautiful mix; must also dance well. Vocal range top: E5 - Vocal range bottom: Ab3

Miriam: (Female, age 25-45) Moses's Hebrew sister. Devout, unswerving, simple-hearted, optimistic. A prophetess. She believes in God and in Moses as the Deliverer and never wavers in her faith in both. Strong rich belt. Vocal range top: Eb5 - Vocal range bottom: G3

Aaron: (Male, age 22-40) Moses's Hebrew brother. Intellectual, sardonic, skeptical, funny. Aaron has reached an accommodation with his life as a slave; he makes a joke of everything to diminish the pain. Aaron is the last Hebrew to believe in Moses; when Moses returns to Egypt and confronts Ramses, asking him to let his people go, Aaron's skepticism is borne out when the Hebrews' labor is doubled. But when Aaron is finally won over, he becomes Moses' most loyal follower. Tenor/high Baritone. Vocal range top: G4 - Vocal range bottom: B2

Nefertari: (Female, age 20-39) Ramses's wife and his Queen of Egypt. Imperious and haughty. Scion of an ancient royal family, she is keenly aware of her position and her importance to the dynasty. She is supremely self-confident and looks down upon Ramses as a member of an upstart family. But at the end, her heart is broken by the death of her son, and she reveals her humanity and love for Ramses. High Alto. Vocal range top: D5 - Vocal range bottom: B3

Jethro: (Male, age 50-65) The High Priest of Midian and Tzipporah's father. A powerful, wise presence, exuding a joy of life and a deep empathy for others. Full of love and buoyancy, with a deep spiritual center. Dance ability a plus. High Baritone. Vocal range top: G4 - Vocal range bottom: A2

Keturah: (Female, 18+ to play 15-17) One of Tzipporah's younger sisters. Feisty and willing to fight when threatened. Good-humored, she and Leah think their older sister is a bit of a head case, and they happily welcome Moses into their tribe. Vocal range top: C#5 - Vocal range bottom: B3

Leah: (Female, age 11-14) One of Tzipporah's younger sisters. Feisty and willing to fight when threatened. Good-humored, she and Keturah think their older sister is a bit of a head case, and they happily welcome Moses into their tribe. Vocal range top: C#5 - Vocal range bottom: B3

Young Miriam: (Female, age 8-11) Moses's Hebrew sister. Vocal range top: C5 - Vocal range bottom: G3

Ensemble: Singers/dancers/actors who portray Hebrew slaves, members of the Egyptian court, Priests, and Midianites. Need to be able to develop strong unique characters and sing harmony. Able to portray wide range of dance and vocal performance styles.

THE SHARKS – A Puerto Rican gang

Maria: A hopeless romantic and innocent young girl. She falls in love with Tony and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Bernardo's younger sister. Strong soprano voice. Range: Bb3 to C6. Some dancing.

Anita: Feisty and assertive. Bernardo's girlfriend. She dispenses older sister advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Strong Alto. Range: F3 to D5. Strong dance required.

Bernardo: A proud, strong, handsome man. Bernardo seeks to carve out territory as a sense of identity for him and his friends. Maria's older brother and Anita's boyfriend. Leader of the Sharks. Limited solo singing. Range: Bb2 to Eb4. Strong dance required.

Chino: An angry and, at times, naive Shark who turns murderous and vengeful. Suitor to Maria and friend of Bernardo's. Dancing/Singing required.

Pepe: Gang member, Dancing/Singing required. Baritone.

Indio: Gang member, Dancing/Singing required. Tenor.

Luis: Gang member, Dancing/Singing required. Baritone/Bass.

Rosalia: Indio's girlfriend, more demure, not too bright. Mezzo Soprano.

Consuela: Tough, young. Pepe's girlfriend. Alto.

Fransisca: Young, Luis' girlfriend. Soprano.

Shark Girls: Strong dancing/Singing required

THE JETS – A Caucasian gang

Tony: A romantic young man and former leader of the Jets, he has found a new lifestyle now that doesn't involve gangs. Tony finds himself violently torn between his friendships and love. Falls in love with Maria and meets an unfortunate death. Genuinely sweet and sincere. Strong tenor voice. Range: Bb2 to Bb4. Limited dancing.

Riff: An athletic, quick-tempered leader of the Jets. He seeks to eliminate the Sharks and establish his own gang's dominance. Tony's best friend, he is eventually murdered by Bernardo. Strong singer/dancer. Range: Bb2 to G4. Strong dance required.

Anybodys: A spunky tomboy who is desperate to become a member of the Jets. The other Jets mock her for her ambitions but generally appreciate her company. Full of energy and heart. Strong dance required.

Diesel: Second-in-command of the Jets. Leader after Riff's death. Baritone/Bass. Strong dance required.

Action: The most quick-tempered member of the Jets, always ready for a fight. Tenor. Strong dance required.

A-Rab: Slightly less quick tempered than Action. Baby John's best friend. Baritone. Strong dance required.

Baby John: The youngest of the Jets, is beaten up during the opening sequence. Tenor. Strong dance required.

Graciella: Riff's girlfriend. Mezzo-Soprano. Strong dance required.

Jet Girls: Strong dancing/Singing required

THE ADULTS

Officer Krupke: The local beat cop. He has no patience for the gangs' conflict and tries to keep tensions from erupting between them. A little dorky, he is regularly mocked by the local gangs. No dance required.

Detective Schrank: A local police detective frustrated by the ongoing violence between the Jets and Sharks. Blunt, brash, racist, and unapologetic. No dance required.

Doc: The adult owner of the store where the Jets hang out. He tries to guide the Jets' youthful angst and provides a safe haven for Tony. Old fashioned and wise in his ways. No dance required.

Glad Hand: Nerdy, overly cheerful and ill-equipped social director at the school dance (Mambo). No dance required.
