Written by Alexandra Lainfiesta, Chula is a music-infused solo performance that begins backstage in 2008, where Aria prepares to premiere the first mariachi opera in Canada, before sweeping back to 1980s Guatemala and mid-1990s Edmonton. Performed by a single actor in both English and Spanish, the piece traces a life shaped by migration, survival, and the pressure to assimilate, bringing to life a chorus of characters who capture the humour, tension, and heartbreak of living between languages. Blending music, storytelling, and theatrical transformation, the work asks what your voice is when you no longer know which language is truest to who you are.
