Spotlight Theatre's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD to Run 10/10-11/7

By:
It's 1935, and racial tensions are high in Maycomb, Alabama. Nonetheless, young Jean Louise Finch -- or Scout, as she is fondly called -- manages to live a rather carefree, privileged existence, insulated from issues of race. All that changes when Scout watches her father, Atticus Finch, defend an innocent man, Tom Robinson, against a potential death sentence, which looms threateningly against him because of prejudice due to race. Scout begins to realize that just because society portrays something as being true doesn't mean that it actually is fact. With the help of Atticus, and her older brother Jem, Scout learns that "growing up" often means doing what is right, even when it comes at great cost.

Spotlight Theatre presents "To Kill a Mockingbird" October 10 through November 7 at the John Hand Theater in Lowry with performances on Fridays, Saturdays at 7:30.p.m; Sundays at 2 p.m and Saturday, October 31 at 2 p.m. (no evening performance on Oct. 31). Tickets are $19-$22 and available by calling 720-880-8727 or online at www.thisisspotlight.com.

"To Kill A Mockingbird," which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, turned 55 this year. The plot and characters are loosely based on Harper Lee's observations of her family and neighbors, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10 years old.

The mockingbird lives in other birds' nests and copies other birds' songs, never singing one of its own. Harmless, it hurts no one, but it never really lives free. As an icon of American mediocrity in the South of the 1930s-1950s, the mockingbird people do not rock the boat.

The cast, under the direction of Bernie Cardell, includes Andy Anderson (Atticus Finch), Darrow Klein (Scout), Kellan Oliver (Jem), Ben Feldman (Dill), Lisa Young (Calpurnia), Darcy Kennedy (Maudie), Cathy Heine (Mrs. Dubose/Court Clerk), David Harms (Mr. Gilmer), Scott Hogg (Heck Tate), Daniel Seifert (Bob Ewell), Allyx Townend (Mayella), Anthony Adu (Tom Robinson), Dan Connell (Judge), Andre Hickman (Rev. Sykes), Robert Anderson (Mr. Cunningham) and Luke Terry as Boo Radley.

Christopher Sergel's interests and talents led him on many adventures throughout the world. As captain of the schooner Chance, he spent two years in the South Pacific; as a writer for Sports Afieldmagazine, he lived in the African bush for a year; as a lieutenant commander during WWII, he taught celestial navigation; as a playwright, his adaptation of Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio was seen on Broadway. But throughout his life, his greatest adventure and deepest love was his work with Dramatic Publishing. During this time, he wrote adaptations of To Kill a Mockingbird, Cheaper By the Dozen, The Mouse That Roared, Up the Down Staircase, Fame, Black Elk Speaks and many more.
