New York Philharmonic Concludes Its Residency At Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival
By: Reynard Loki
The New York Philharmonic presents its final two concerts in Vail, both led by Music Director Designate Alan Gilbert, and says farewell to two of its own — Principal Clarinet Stanley Drucker, who is retiring after 60 years, and Associate Principal Bass Jon Deak, retiring after 39.
The New York Philharmonic, founded in 1842 by a group of local musicians led by American-born Ureli Corelli Hill, is by far the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, and one of the oldest in the world. It currently plays some 180 concerts a year, and on December 18, 2004, gave its 14,000th concert — a milestone unmatched by any other symphony orchestra in the world.
