Fifteen-year-old Aseem Ganeshe is your typical American kid-brilliant, multi-ethnic and dying to star on a reality TV show. But there are just a few things standing in his way, including his older sister Anjali, a med student who still lives at home, and his interfering East Indian grandmother, Deepa, who has come to visit from London.
The last thing their widowed mother, Barbara, needs is Deepa appearing out of the blue with "solutions" to everybody's problems. Mix in the associate producer of the game/reality show, "Stump the Brainiacs," coming to interview Aseem for the show in addition to a prospective Indian suitor for Anjali, and the Ganeshe family's problems are multiplying. Aseem also is struggling with his Caucasian/Indian identity, his giftedness and the recent death of his father.
The cast, in alphabetical order, is Rajat Agarwal (Daya), Carolyn Demanelis (Anjali),Yassir Elmkhanter (Aseem), Devra Keyes (Barbara), Ethan Yazzie Mintz (Jake), Rekha Ohal (Deepa) and Arash Zadeh (Ashok).
"Gifted" won The Edge Theatre Company's 2012 New Play Festival as well as honorable mention in the international 2009 New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest, sponsored by the Merit Theater & Film Group, New York City. It also was selected for a staged reading with The Colorado Theatre Guild (CTG).
